Why using the Right Cables can Make all the Difference

December 8th, 2011 by admin

Did you know that using the right type of cable can make a real difference in the performance of your technology? It’s true; whether you’re working with audio, computers or home electrical appliances, the right cable really can help.

Some are skeptical on whether different types of cables can really make that much of a difference, but any audiophile who has tested different audio with high performance power cables knows the great advantage in sound quality. The right cable can increase the audio quality produced from your system in an astounding way – going from just plain good to damn near amazing.

And the difference is not just in sound; if you want the highest definition picture on your television, you’d better pick the right HDMI cable. With hundreds on the market, ranging in price up to the highest performance you can get, you’ll get a crystal clear picture you really notice.

High-end power cables can also improve the performance of your broadband, satellite television, and even your computer.

How does it work?

A high performance cable can work to improve digital data transfer, for example using copper cabling, and also reduce noise that ordinary cables can pick up. They have better connectors, shielded wire and provide higher conductivity (for instance, copper again) and flexibility.

Results you can actually hear vary in the same way the power cords vary; some use capacitors, inductors or ferrites to control the electromagnetic fields around audio components. The result depends on both the audio device and the connection/quality of cable. It just takes a bit of experimenting to find what you think works best for your system.

What is a custom cable assembly?

Custom cable assembly is a way to create the perfect cable for your own individual needs. If you know the technical specifications, connectivity solutions and the performance you need, chances are you can create or order a custom cable assembly to suit you.

Off-the-shelf, you can pick up upgradeable cables that will perform with future components, or you can choose to go custom, giving you the option to maximize your performance on your own budget and to suit your individual requirements; you can even specify the length of your ideal cable. Many websites offer quick and affordable custom cable assembly solutions, but you can also DIY, so why not take a look today?

Christmas Ideas for 2012: Converting those home VHS tapes to DVD

December 8th, 2011 by admin

Does Grandma already have more scarves than she can wear?  Are you pretty sure Dad doesn’t really need another tie or golf bag?  In these tough economic times, none of us can afford to spend money on gifts that won’t be used.  Moreover, the best family gift is one which helps create and preserve family memories. Consider this Christmas idea for 2012: Converting those home VHS tapes to DVD.
Why a VHS to DVD Makes a Great Gift
When movies are transferred to DVD, they are much easier to watch and they can be viewed on either a computer or a T.V. Best of all you can also make a menu, so you can skip to your favorite parts, or watch separate sections.  Of course you can also put in fun transitions, titles, and captions to make your home movies more fun to watch.

What if I don’t have VHS Tapes?
Maybe you are worried because you never really got around to turning those old camcorder files into VHS tapes, or maybe you even have film and negatives stuffed in a box somewhere.  Luckily, many of these can also be converted into digital files and made into something which can be viewed on a computer or your T.V. You can convert:

  • Betamax
  • VHS
  • MicroMV
  • Hi8
  • MiniDV
  • 8mm and 16mm film
  • slides, negatives and photos

Why You Need to Transfer Soon
The good news is that you can transfer all of these family memories from film, analog tape and paper into digital images that will be able to be preserved for many years to come.  The bad news is that the longer you wait, the worse those images will be.  We are all familiar with the way old color pictures from the 70s have faded with time.  The same sort of destruction happens to our VHS and other format films.  If your tapes are over ten years old, you may have lost some of the image quality already.

How Can I Convert VHS to DVD?
In order to convert your VHS and other tapes, films, and photos to DVD, they need to be converted into digital files.  Still images need to be scanned and movies need to be put through a computer and changed from analog to digital using a converter software program. After they are digitized, they can be edited using Windows Movie Maker or any other video editing program.

Do-it-Yourself Converting of VHS to DVD
You can convert your VHS and other tapes to DVD if you have a device which can play the tape and the right connections between your computer and the player (usually a camcorder or T.V).  You will also need a software VHS to DVD converter program.

Technology Challenged? Try a Converting Service
Not everyone has the time, correct equipment or technical know-how to do a VHS to DVD transfer.  Furthermore, some formats like film and slides are hard to do without special equipment. Luckily, you can choose a file transfer service that will do the conversion for you.   You send your tapes to the company and they will return them to you along with your digitized DVD, or several DVD copies if you want them for gifts.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving
Once you’ve converted your VHS tapes to DVD, you can use those digital files to make other movies later by putting together theme movies like: “Vanessa as a Baby,”  “Family Christmas Memories,” “Brad the Basketball Player,” or “Grandma and the Grandkids.” No store bought gift can compare with the gift of family memories. If you are stuck for Christmas gift ideas, consider converting your VHS tapes to DVDs.

Vehicle Tracking and Fuel Card, The Right Combo

July 29th, 2011 by admin

The world is facing a fuel crisis now in terms of constantly changing price levels; its ramifications are already sending down signals of threat to industries that consume fuel for its day to day operation. For over the last five years, especially after the onset of economic recession, fuel prices have refused to die down, as a result the top level management across many industries are facing the heat. Never before has the need to diminish unwarranted fuel costs been a priority for businesses in general. Fleet management businesses, especially, had to undergo a lot of changes in their system of operation so that they can operate and monitor fleet from a vehicle tracking site in an economical manner. While looking around for reasonable answers, many companies want to make sure that they are not put out of business by any unforeseen external factors for instance drastic increase in the fuel prices etc. And, when the fuel crisis is at a low ebb, nothing can an administration do to hold things until the business bounces back on the road to recovery.

Fuel cards are a temporary solution to those companies that see it that way. However there are a few companies offering real time vehicle tracking solutions which look to cling to their business during tough times by making smart usage of fuel cards. Actually, it all comes down to how the problem is approached. The idea of using fuel card was not favoured initially, but the outlook of the cynical companies had to change once the business intelligence of choosing to use a combo became obvious. The combination of fuel card and real time vehicle tracking has paid off so greatly that it has become a trend in itself, with more companies-that just entered the scene-attempting to emulate the same strategy. Maximising revenues and cutting down fuel cards were just objectives of choosing a vehicle tracking partner before, but with the implementation of a fuel card into the setup every company strives to offset threats of fuel price hike on top of improving delivery efficiency and thereby increase profit margins.

Using fuel card in tandem with vehicle tracking systems turned out to be a beneficial strategy for many companies; and with the fuel crisis only worsening from here, many budding companies are choosing to fall back on this combination in an attempt to stay firm on the ground until the testing times are out.

Wireless Networking Cards – A Closer Look

April 12th, 2011 by admin

Ok, so you’ve read all the cool stuff and heard all the great things about going wireless and then it just hit you. However, that works you don’t know or care but it hit you. That was it, the little voice in your head said, “do it” and that was that. Unfortunately, that was awhile ago and since that “moment” you’ve done your part. You did some research into what was needed to upgrade your computer but it’s all just so darn confusing. You keep thinking, why can’t someone just give me a few basics so I feel more comfortable about this whole “upgrading” process.

If the above paragraph describes you and if you’re the typical computer user it probably does, then it’s time to exhale, calm your nerves, grab a latte and settle in because hopefully this article can shed a little understanding on at least one aspect of going wireless – the network card.

Like most “typical” computers users, you love your computer and you’ve pretty good at surfing the net, using email and you’ve probably even gotten fairly proficient at using your favorite word processing program but when it comes to some of the more technical aspects of your computer or computing in general, you are probably about as close to a “deer in the headlights” as you can get.

Hey, no problem because you’ve stumbled across a source that hopefully can shed a little light into that wireless networking card abyss. See, those searching skills do come in handy.

Let me start out by saying that when it comes to selecting a wireless networking card you can pretty much ignore all the hoopla except for the following three key factors: range, speed, and standards. Ok, let’s do it and take a look at a few specifics.

Below is a typical specification for wireless networking card. This one just happens to be for a Linksys wireless PCMCIA laptop card. Frankly, I can’t tell you if this card rocks or it stinks, I’m simply using it as an example. And with that, let’s take a closer look.

Here’s the description from Amazon: 11 Mbps high-speed transfer rate; interoperable with IEEE 802.11b (DSSS) 2.4Ghz-compliant equipment; plug-and-play operation provides easy set up; long operating range (up to 120m indoor); advanced power management features conserve valuable notebook PC battery life; rugged metal design with integrated antenna; compatible with virtually all major operating systems; works with all standard Internet applications; automatic load balancing and scale back; model no. WPC11

Like I mentioned above, most of the specs can be ignored. To start with, “compatible with virtually all major operating systems.” That means nothing. It’s simply fluff to expand the description to make the card appear better.

Range
Take a look at where it says “up to 120m indoor”. This means that the maximum range of the wireless card is 120 meters — sure if everything was perfect. And by the way, one meter is equal to about 39 inches or 3 feet. However, in the real world where nothing is ever perfect interference caused by thick walls, other power sources and the list goes on could reduce this number by as much as 90% – so just be aware of this.

And without enough range, your wireless network is no longer wireless and therefore – worthless. It serves no purpose to go wireless if you have to keep your computer next to the wireless port in order for it to work or if you have multiple computers to keep them all in the same room to get them to connect to each other.

As a rule of thumb, unless your walls are made of drywall or wood, it’s best to buy about four times the strength you think you’ll need. Even in perfect conditions, get twice what you think you’ll need – just to be safe.

Speed
Take another look at the description and find where it says Mbps. Mbps is the speed of the wireless connection – 11 Mbps is about one and a half megabytes per second. All 802.11b wireless cards have a speed of 11Mbps, while 802.11g cards run at 54Mbps or nearly 5 times faster. And of course, the next generation will be even faster.

Clearly, speed is important to your wireless network because it’s going to directly influence how long you have to wait to connect, how fast pages upload, file transfer rates, and your overall computer experience is always better when things download faster. I don’t know about you but if something takes more than a few seconds to download, I start to get impatient.

However, because there are currently very few Internet connections running at speeds over 11Mbps – it’s really as much as you need, at least for now.

Standards
You’ve probably noticed in the above specs the number 802.11 followed by a letter b. The b is the standard that the wireless device conforms too. Currently, there are 3 standards – a, b and g.

In a nutshell, 802.11b and 802.11g are compatible with each other while 802.11a isn’t compatible with either. Due to the incompatibility issues with the other two standards and because it’s an older less robust standard I would stay away from cards using it.

Between b and g, b is cheaper but slower, while g is more expensive but faster. It’s also worth considering that adding a b-speed device to a network that has g-speed devices will often slow the whole network down to b-speed, making the g-devices pointless. Basically, the network will operate at the speed of its weakest link.

If your wireless device doesn’t conform to the right standards, it’s not going to be much good to you. I often see uninformed people bidding for used wireless equipment on eBay, not realizing that it’s going to be terribly slow and may not work with other equipment they might have. Always check what standard the wireless equipment is using and if you don’t know the 802.11 letter, don’t buy it!

Wireless Barcode Scanners: The Next Generation Gizmo

April 4th, 2011 by admin

Wireless barcode scanners are a clear example of the best just having got better. Much like Alexander Graham Bells wired telephone that got eclipsed by the cordless phone which became a craze across millions of households, wireless bar code scanners have become a mega-hit with an ever-increasing number of business entrepreneurs making the upward shift to realize greater productivity day in day out. To put it simply, wireless barcode scanners offer you all the benefits of your regular barcode scanner or barcode reader and then, some more!

But hold on just yet, while wireless barcode readers and scanners are blitzing the market, you still need to which type of the device you need to best suit your business needs before going ahead and making a purchase. You need to very clearly articulate the reason for wanting to move into the wireless barcode scanner space and the plausible reasons for wanting to go wireless could be any of the following:-

* You need the freedom of mobility to be able to capture information away from your computer because of the spatial location of your tagged products

* You might want to collect the data away from your computer but be able to sync it or upload it once you get back to the origin i.e. the computer

* You might not only want to collect data away from the computer but also be able to log on via wireless networks to a database and post the captured information

Thus simply put, do you need a simple barcode scanner with a really long cord or do you have a genuine need for a wireless barcode scanner? And once you do a cost comparison on the various types of the barcode readers and barcode scanners, both wired as well as cordless, you will know exactly how much you are paying for what, and how much you are likely to benefit from the application of the device. Accurate information capture, ease of the information capture, speed at which different materials can be barcode registered and tagged, exquisite levels of data control are just some of the innumerous benefits that this technology promises for the user!

Finally a key thing that you need to keep in mind is that implementation of a new technology by itself does not guarantee success. You need to handle the change from one level to the next very well and proactively too, as in the case of wireless barcode scanners too. People management as part of change management is crucial to the success of your business and this should be given core focus. New technology is useless unless its espoused as a unifying cause by all in the work force. Once you have mastered the change in people, you have truly put yourself on the road to progress. Experience the wonders of wireless barcode scanners and be awestruck!

Download MP4 For Iphone

April 1st, 2011 by admin

If you’re lucky enough to be one of the early Iphone owners, there’s a good chance that you’ll want to download some movies for it, which come in MP4 format. If that’s the case there are a few things you will need-a computer, internet access, and obviously your Iphone. Check out the rest of this article to find out how to go about the rest.

In order to make sure you don’t spend 3 months downloading each movie, there are a few prerequisites-firstly, you’ll need a fairly modern computer-it doesn’t have to be some big gaming powerhouse, but as long as it’s not more than say 5 years old, and of course you will need the fastest internet connection you can find. It is possible to download the MP4s using dial up, but it will literally take you weeks.

It’s also worth noting that at this point there is no way to download stuff like this directly to the Iphone, so you will need to make sure you have the required space free on your computer, so you can save it there and transfer it to the Iphone.

The other essential you are going to need to have to download the MP4s for the Iphone is somewhere to download them from. This sounds obvious, but is often the hardest piece of the puzzle to crack.

You’ll find the MP4 download sites on the net fall into 2 distinct categories- Sites that are unregulated and dangerous, letting people upload whatever they want with no regulation, so you have some losers there uploading viruses and stuff, and the other category which is just normal websites trying to make a living.

Traditionally, people get their downloads from torrent sites, but they fit directly into the first category. People have no idea how dangerous it can be to use those kinds of sites-not only because of the dangerous software, but because they are in fact illegal. People go to jail for this.

The newer and probably the safer kind of site are the ones that have started to appear over the last few months-they offer generally a wider selection of downloads than the torrent sites, and they are certainly safer for your computer. The way it works is that you would pay them a one off admin fee to secure your membership, and in return they would grant you unlimited access to their download library. The membership will usually last for lifetime, which will literally give you thousands and thousands of downloads for the price of that one off fee.

Hopefully you have found this article useful and will now be able to safely download MP4s for your Iphone.

Why Change To Windows Vista: Part 2 of 4

March 25th, 2011 by admin

Why Change To Windows Vista: Part 2 of 4

Having caught his breath and dispatched the laugh monster (just in time for Halloween) the Tennessee Mountain Man is ready to resume his look at Microsoft’s 100 Reasons Why we should be using Windows Vista.

In Part 1 of Why Change To Windows Vista, Remote Helpdesk 1, examined Microsoft’s reasons 1 through 25. Today we will cover reasons 26 – 50 so lets get started.

MS#26. “Because you’re a multitasker”

While Scientific studies reveal the hidden costs of multitasking as technology increasingly tempts people to do more than one thing at a time Bill Gates and Microsoft keep pushing for more.

If anyone were tempting Microsoft employees to use anything other than best practices there would be one of Microsoft’s infamous law suits.

Aren’t all of us forced to multi task toooo much as it is? Back off Gates!

MS#27. ” Because your computer can keep up with you while you’re on the go”

Lik
e the pager and the cell phone, the curse of the hand held, laptop, note book and other portables is that all technology, including our computers, have kept up with us too well…no uninterrupted vacations, dinners, shows, golf games, or romantic sessions. Get this contraption out of my bedroom!

MS#28. “Enjoy your memories, larger than life”

Sorry, The Tennessee Mountain Man finds nothing new here.

MS#29. “Take the handwritten approach”

O.K. Been around forever. Ever checked out at the store or used an ATM with a touch screen? How about Monday Night Football? Been there, done that.

MS#30. “Restore your PC in an instant”

Hello! I know I am not as smart as the Microsoft gurus but haven’t that covered this already, in Part 1 maybe?! I guess that is why he is Bill Gates owning Microsoft and I own a remote helpdesk performing online computer repair services.

In the army we taught by telling students what we were going to teach them, doing the teaching, and then reiterating what we had told them. But, we didn’t try to cover it up calling it three different lectures.

P.S. Don’t miss their last caveat.

MS#31. “Because your PC lets you know if something’s wrongand helps you fix it”

Sorry, The Tennessee Mountain Man could find nothing new here either unless the user has been more lazy than most. It was all available with earlier, faster, less expensive, and less intrusive operating systems.

Now the Tennessee Mountain Man is in danger of becoming repetitive, but Microsoft is not giving me anything to work with here.

MS#32. “Streamline IT management across your business”

Oh!!!!! So!!!!!!! It is actually just an upgrade Microsoft Server 2003 with all the patches and fixes included.

MS#33. “Preserve a lifetime of memories”

It has a back up feature!!!! Really?

MS#34. “Connect to the network at work or school”

Not to mention connecting at your motel, Mickey D’s, your grand ma’s, and a million other places. Kids and businessmen have been doing this for years…Next!

MS#35. “Because you’ll know it when you see it”

And we haven’t seen it yet….moving right along….

MS#36. “Get a “do-over” when you need it”

And I have some swamp property I need to unload before you lose everything.

MS#37. “Keep your info under lock and key”

This may be the best reason so far. But, let’s face it, if Microsoft and the U.S. Government can’t keep hackers out of their own stuff do you really think you have a chance?

On the other hand, have you lost the pass words to get into today’s IBM laptops?

MS#38. “It’s the cure for red-eye”

No, they were not brazen enough to say it would keep you from working nights. What they are doing is touting an existing technology.

MS#39. “Relive your memorieseach and every one”

O.K. Microsoft likes to be redundant, remote computer repair services does not.

MS#40. “Because you love what you do”

Especially when the windows operating don’t crash or lock up, and performs more reliably like Ubuntu.

But watch Microsoft’s caveat at the end of this reasoning.

MS#41. “Because your PC will stay up to date, automatically”

Has it not done that for years? Oh, yes, I’m sorry. The Tennessee Mountain Man almost forgot. This is apparently our warning that Microsoft will come through the back door and make any changes they want whenever they wish despite our desires and upgrade and maintenance settings.

MS#42. “E-mail your photos without worrying about the file size”

Oh, really? The ISP on each end of the spectrum may have different ideas.

MS#43. “It’s parent friendly”

What is that supposed to mean? It is slow? Because it is!

Oh, sorry they are referring to parental controls like the ones parents and bosses have used forever. Got it.

MS#44. “Because you have a need for speed”

“Need to speed up your computer? Simply plug a USB memory stick into your desktop or notebook computer and let Windows ReadyBoost do the rest.”

O.K., I could, but I won’t. Kudos!!!!!!!!

MS#45. “Because you hate all those boxes and wires”

That is why we had already eliminated them…..next…

MS#46. “Your music can look as good as it sounds”

At Branson maybe! Now just what does this do that is an improvement over XP?

MS#47. “Let the fun start now”

Are we having fun yet? No!!!!!!!

MS#48. “Stay connected wherever you go”

Duh!!!!!! We just covered this subject!

MS#49. “Take your workspace with you”

Although Microsoft remains redundant, I can’t help but respond….The labor laws of the U.S. makes provisions for breaks and meal times.

I want to get away on occasion and Microsoft wants a robot chasing me around demanding more…more…more…more!

MS#50. “Get more out of the web”

Watch the caveat as Microsoft makes a johnny come lately feeble attempt to catch up with other browsers.

Is the Tennessee Mountain Man speechless yet? No, but we’ll take another stab at it tomorrow with “Why Change To Windows Vista: Part 3 of 4″.

Download Ipod Nano Songs

March 21st, 2011 by admin

Download Ipod Nano song is not difficult as long as you know what you are doing, and one of the best features is that it doesn’t matter whether you have a regular Ipod, Ipod Nano or even Ipod Video! Keep reading, and I’ll show you just how to do it…

For this article, I am assuming that you already have the songs you want to download on your computer, or that they are on a CD. If you haven’t got them in this form, and are looking to download free songs for your Ipod Nano, please see the links at the bottom of this article.

Step 1-
You should have the Itunes program on your computer, ideally the current version. If you need to get it, connect to Apple.com to update your version. It doesn’t take long to update to the current version , and it should be easy to do.

Step 2-
Before you can download Ipod Nano songs onto your Ipod, you must rip the songs from your CDs and put them into Itunes. This is quite an easy task, but if you need help with this, Itunes will help you with the built in guide

Step3-
Now that your songs are downloaded into Itunes, you will have to use the Ipod connecting lead to join your Ipod to a USB socket on your computer. It is then easy to drag and drop the songs from Itunes onto the Ipod. You will probably have to wait a little time for the Ipod to register and store all the songs, so don’t disconnect it before it has finished.

Step 4-
You can now listen to your downloaded tunes whenever you want to!

It is really pretty easy to download Ipod Nano songs if you already have them on CD, but assuming you want to download some new songs online, you can do one of two things.. 1-Use Itunes, where you have to pay for each song individually, or 2- Find a few good free download sites. These sites can be very useful indeed if you find some which are trustworthy, and I have done my research and found 3 of the best for you, which you can find by clicking the links below.

Downloading songs for your Ipod or Nano or video or any other kind of Ipod needn’t be difficult or expensive, as we have shown you here! If you find this useful why not pass it on to a friend with the link on the top right?

Download free ipod music-the legal way

March 11th, 2011 by admin

A lot of people know where they can download free Ipod music, but the problem is that it is not legal. The world governments are becoming ever more efficient with tracing illegal downloads, so to avoid potentially serious consequences you will need to find out how to download free ipod music-the legal way!

Download Free Ipod Legal Music-Tip 1-
Use a download site that is genuine. Don’t use a P2P site which is full of popups etc, Use a reliable site that gives you unlimited downloads at high speed. It is not easy to find a genuine site like this, so if you do come across one, make sure you stick with it! Later on in this article I will give you some help with finding reputable sites..

Download Free Ipod Legal Music Tip 2-
Never get sucked in by hype. Whenever a site seems too good to be true, you can be sure that it is too good to be true. You will find a lot of P2P sites which claim to offer a lot of free downloads, but when you actually go to download something, the site will be very slow, and the chances are the download won’t be what you wanted. P2P sites are used by a lot of computer hackers who try and spread viruses. What they do is upload any file, put the spyware or virus in it, and pretend that it is something in high demand, so that people download it. On top of this, some of them will still ask you to pay for a download, despite claiming that they were supposed to be free!

Download Free Ipod Legal Music Tip 3-
Never do anything illegal. It is getting easier all the time for law enforcement officers to trace exactly what people are downloading. Everybody likes to receive stuff for free, but you have to consider what is worth risking, just to get the last episode of the OC?

The good news is that we are starting to see sites appear which give you a fast, safe way to download a lot of films and videos, directly to your computer, so that you can transfer them to your Ipod.

The only small downside is that you will probably need to pay a small administration fee to access a site like this. It is only a small downside, as I think $20 to $50 is a reasonable amount to pay for unlimited downloads for the rest of your life. They need to charge this as it goes toward the upkeep of their servers, and this allows them to offer this range of high speed downloads in the first place.

I mentioned that I have done some research for you, and I’ve sourced a few of these amazing sites for you. You can see how to get to them from the blue links below. Pretty soon you’ll realise that downloading free Ipod legal music is a lot easier than you might have thought!

Secrets to making money online with your list funnel

March 8th, 2011 by admin

There is a great potential in product funnels as used in mailing lists to earn you money.

But they have to be set up correctly – something most of the advice I’ve gathered from articles on the web don’t do.

Let’s cover some basics. 3-4% of the people you contact (or opt-in) will buy anything you put in front of them – so the bigger your list, the more income you will make.

80% of your total income will come from 20% of your public – more or less. (And this means 64% comes from 4%, 51% comes from .3% – at least on paper.)

As people don’t find things to be of value, they will drop off/opt-out.

With a poor conversion factor, you will probably wind up with 50% or more of your list being that 3-4% and so this will skew your data. High opt-outs, few purchases will give you a steady income – as long as you keep creating new products for these “buy anything” public. You are then in maintain mode for this small niche – and your income is pegged.

You want to be able to scale your income and keep increasing it, plus freeing your time to find new niches – not just new stuff to sell old customers.

Conversion is the key. You have to take that 80% of your public and convert them to buyers – if not big buyers, you want them to move up your funnel as fast as possible.

There are a couple of solutions to this: [Note that the below is new theory based on study of brick-and-mortar sales functions - but what works in the real world converts over to the virtual simply.]

1) Make your funnel look like an upside down champagne glass (the old-fashioned wide at the top, thin stem and then flattening out to a base as wide as the top – an hourglass that was sat on, more or less).

What you don’t want is to have a shape like a grain silo – straight sides up and down with only one path to the top, take it or leave it.

Think champagne glassses – for the expensive varieties of that beverage you can celebrate with. You want to have lots of introductory services so that they can take cheap or free courses one after the other, while you continue to build relationships with them – plying them with various surveys until you know where they personally are coming from/looking for and also you have a better idea where your beginning list participants are at. Many don’t buy right off, so give them more to do which builds trust so they will.

The top of your upside-down champagne-glass-funnel is wide again – but for those who have made it right on up with their Paypal account open to you at every offer. You have to keep them buying, so have a lot of new material up there, which they can use and benefit from. This doesn’t just mean selling them more hours of personal coaching – which is expensive for you as well. New webinars on your latest research – on a reserved seat basis – is probably a more likely ticket.

2) Make people an affiliate at every level. This builds your community and allows participation. As well, you can offer rewards to top-performing affiliates, so that they work for you just to earn those top rewards (which other people buy outright). Regular training webinars at an affordable price also will keep them working for you. This is also a way for these people to get more exposure to your solutions and makes them more able to afford your higher-end services.

Now an interesting organizational point comes up. You are going to not just “segment” your list as some articles have pointed out, but you are going to have to subdivide it, stratify it, and then segment those stratas and divisions. Let’s clarify those terms:

Division – part of the list by product line. You have an autoresponder service which should give you virtually unlimited email series. Set up your service so that you are servicing each different product line as itself.

Example: I have a list for people interested in self-help books and products. Another division would be the list of affiliates selling my self-help products. Affiliates wouldn’t be excluded from taking services – they should be encouraged – but regular public wouldn’t know what’s in the affiliate division, unless they signed up for it. Now, in the self-help area, I have general self-help and a section just based on the Law of Attraction. These people can go back and forth through all the lower-level ecourses I offer (and I am planning about 5 or more, in addition to special reports, MP3’s, etc.) Afterall, they are part of the self-help division, if not (yet) self-help affiliates.

Example: Suppose I start a blook on earning money through Internet marketing. This is a completely different division to self-help. Even the affiliate program is completely different. Now they could actually subscribe to my self-help division, but generally I wouldn’t offer it in my email series – except perhaps at the very top end.

What this does is to enable you to have multiple income sources from the Internet, using the same autoresponder service for each source – but being able to keep them straight from each other. Note that each ecourse is its own series, as might be each special report. But at the end of each ecourse is the option to sign up for another ecourse – which continues until they buy something, where they are bumped upstairs. Your subscribers move seamlessly from segment to segment until they “graduate” to the next higher level through buying a higher-priced service.

Not to be cruel, they are able to complete their current ecourse, but ecourses after that will have a different set of emails, thought the material will be the same.

This opens up Stratas. Once a person has bought something, you want to sell them the next gradient material – although they might jump for your top-dollar item right off the bat, so you have to craft these carefully.

Example: person on a free ecourse buys your $47 item. Now you are going to work on getting them to buy your $147 or $197 item – but you can occasionally offer them a glimpse at webinars or personal coaching, just to tantalize them. If they don’t buy, then get them in for another round of services at that level. More ecourses, with emails that offer them more $47 – $197 items of the same value are in order. As they trust you to deliver, they’ll order from you. And the freebies you give out at this level (which are not widely available) are all valued at $47 or more.

Once they buy a $147 or greater level item, they are bumped upstairs to another strata. On that level, the freebies are proportionately greater in value, and they are being offered your $297 item. They may start racking up their credit cards at this point – if not, give them another high value service.

At the top strata, you can give them everything you have to offer for sale, since they trust you inplicitly with delivering high-quality items routinely. At this point, you also should have a sales record of them, as well as what courses they have taken – so you can personally suggest some items to them based on their experience. You now have developed a one-on-one relationship and can easily move into the per-hour coaching. Enough of these and you can reserve a suite of rooms and a meeting hall in some exotic locale so that they can all meet you in person and get their questions answered personally. A workshop – which they foot the bill for.

With the whole system in place, I can now talk to you about Segments. On the intro strata, the people who didn’t buy right off got another intro service. Each intro service is a segment. On the next strata up, they could take more courses (segments), but the emails were tailored to their new status as a paid customer. Here they go again from segment to segment until they buy the next-higher course.

As you test and tweak your squeeze pages, you will be able to move them rapidly up to the highest levels where you can have them buy anything and everything. Your conversion rates will be much higher and your efficiency at turning newbies into trusting supporters will be high.

Why do I say to make affiliates at every strata/level? Because they can give their own testimonials about how your product has helped them change their own lives. If you set up your autoresponder properly, you can allow them to email that segment of your list with appropriate offers – or create a new segment just for joint ventures (and be able to shut it down if you have too many opt-outs happening from confusing cross-sales). But good affiliates can open up trusted lines with individuals on your funnel and help them take their next higher step – as the affiliate gets paid all the way.

The logical solution for Affiliates is to offer them personally segmented lists, available to them and to you only – in this way, they have a guaranteed percentage of all their sales to these individuals.

Yes, this would get complicated real fast – but around this time you are making so much income that you hire a person to chart this all out (and who is paid a percentage of the total gross, so constantly works to keep it efficient and come up with new ideas).

The above was based on studies of a multi-national organization and interviews with top sales personell on every level as well as their immediate managers through the course of several years.

What autoresponders do is allow you to have a multi-national sales force for your particular niche products – but automate them instead of having to deal with the massive HR headaches and meet that regular payroll. Start small and when you get past your first couple million in income, you can then contract someone to keep your ball rolling for your – freeing you to find more niches to invest your time in…

Now these are just notes at this point, a lot has to be fleshed out and tested. But I thought to break this to you early as I continue my research into this field.

Web-based Learning Management Systems Used In Partner Support Settings

March 6th, 2011 by admin

In many respects, e-Learning has matured as a technology and industry. Today we will look at how web-based learning management systems can be and are being used as part of the partner support function in a company or organization.

What is a learning management system?

Learning management systems (LMSs) are web-based software application platforms used to plan, implement, and assess learning processes related to online and offline training administration and performance management. LMSs provide an instructor a way to create and deliver content, monitor learners participation, and assess student performance. They also provide learners with the ability to use interactive features, such as threaded discussions, web conferencing, discussion forums, and other methods of communication.

Where and why are learning management systems being used in partner support settings?

LMSs are being used in business-to-business, high-process, value-added, and technology-oriented business environments in industries like telecommunications, advanced electronic technology, semiconductor manufacturing, insurance, banking, medical products, and others. Learning management systems are being used in partner support settings because they can be a cost-effective solution to providing performance support for a companys products and services.

In some ways, partner support operations may be similar to customer support settings, but they possess some distinct differences. More often than not, and by its very nature, a partner channel of distribution exists because the partner adds value to the product and services your company offers. Partner support operations may be more concerned with tactical distribution or other issues because they are responsible for providing their part of the value chain in the delivery of your product or service.

Partners walk a different road with product end users. Partners need the flexibility to provide information and support customer needs, but in a way that supports and amplifies the value their company brings to the partner channel.

Why is it cost-effective to use an LMS for your companys partner support operations?

Learning management systems have lots of functionality that can be used in partner support organizations. A good LMS lets you create multiple partner campuses, which the partners themselves can customize to meet an end-user customers needs. Each partner can have their own look and feel, with a large selection of capabilities to deliver their unique value-add to the product or service.
Learning management systems can be used to create a library of custom online courses that demonstrate how to use products and services. These courses can be easily updated with the information/service offering unique to the partners contribution to the product. They can have the same look and feel as the partners site, to maintain a branded experience. The course can be updated at will, so youre not paying every three months to print new product guides and support manuals.

LMSs can be used to track and monitor your partners activities, instead of using a bunch of spreadsheets. This is very effective in scenarios where partners must be certified to use your products and services. The learning management system can be set up to notify a partner when their certification is set to expire, using an email tickler so they can recertify on your product. The partner organizations themselves can be configured into a hierarchy within the learning management system, which can be used to manage the partner distribution channel.

What other features in learning management systems can be used for the partner support function?

A well-designed LMS comes with a help desk feature that can be used for 24/7 partner and end-user customer support. Learning management systems can have integrated web conferencing technology, which can be used in a number of ways to support partners and end-user customers Such as:

synchronous training used in product implementation;

web conferencing on a new feature set that can be archived for later viewing;

actual, on-the-spot tech-support using the share your desktop feature so your tech can go in and fix any problems

and more.

LMSs can have a built-in survey tool that allows you to query your partners and end-user customers with the results stored in the learning management system database for later use. Learning management systems can have a single sign-on/e-Commerce registration feature that can be used to sell add-on features. LMSs also may have events management/seminar logistics add-on applications that can help you manage both your off-site and onsite partner and end-user customer support training. Each individual partner campus that is created can have its own reference area for materials, to help supplement online course content.

A company can realize effective resource planning and substantial cost savings by using learning management systems in partner support settings. The support offered through the functionality of a learning management system can go a long way to cement the relationship between the company and its partner distribution channel, and will have a direct impact on both organizations bottom lines. Using a learning management system, one or two channel partnership managers or business development managers can manage and direct thousands of partner firms at substantially reduced costs, with the ability to provide precise support requirements customized to that partners individual needs. In conclusion, web-based learning management systems can be a very useful, cost effective way to manage a companys partner support function.

Don’t Throw Away That Laptop, Get A Replacement LCD Screen

Don’t Throw Away That Laptop, Get A Replacement LCD Screen

Many people are paralyzed when their laptop computers are broken or damaged. They are willing to do almost anything or pay any price to get the offending piece or part replaced so that they can get on with their lives.

One part that is especially vulnerable on a laptop computer is the screen. An LCD screen, the type of screen that is used in most laptop computers, is very vulnerable to scratching or other damage.

Fortunately, a damaged LCD screen is not the end of your laptop. Replacement LCD screens can be very affordable and the turn around time to getting them fixed can be very quick if you know where to go and what to look for.

The first thing you will want to do when you are looking for replacement LCD screens is to not panic. Many people get too upset when their computers aren’t working and then they set themselves up to get taken advantage of.

Investing even an hour or two into finding the right price and an honest repairman could make all the difference in the quality of repair that you get.

However, that extra hour or two that you should spend shopping for replacement LCD screens usually won’t get your computer back to you any faster and may end up costing you time.

Look for local places with good reputations. Call around and ask about pricing before you show up. You may also want to call friends, family, and acquaintances for recommendations.

Actually, the ideal time to locate honest and good computer repair people is when you first get your new computer. After the warranty runs out, you will need to take care of problems yourself.

Ideally, you should do the research on where to get replacement LCD screens and other parts and repairs when you first get your computer. However, if you didn’t do that, all is not lost. You can still quickly determine where the best place to go to get replacement LCD screens with just a couple of simple tips.

There are many stores that offer great prices on the internet for replacement LCD screens. However, unless you are sending your computer back to the manufacturer for a covered repair, sending out your laptop for repairs like getting replacement LCD screens is ill-advised.

With the mail, you are only lengthening the amount of time you are without your computer. Secondly, replacement LCD screens are a common repair and don’t require sending it to some company far from where you live.

Also, you run the risk of losing or damaging your computer while it is being shipped. Lastly, what do you really know about the company where you are mailing your computer?

It could be a scam of some kind and taking action would be very difficult and expensive. Staying close to home is usually a much better and quicker policy.

Saving Time And Money With Lettings Software

March 2nd, 2011 by admin

Choosing the right lettings software package could make a huge difference to your business. By automating the complex administration involved with keeping landlords and tenants happy, you can save time and money, leaving you free to market your business and focus on your clients.

How can I save time?

Installing good software to manage the administration of your business allows you to reduce the amount of time you spend sorting out landlords, tenants, properties and finances. If you dont currently have a software solution in place, or you have one thats been running for several years, you may be frustrated with the length of time you have to spend sorting out paperwork, matching property owners with the people who are renting from them, categorising properties into price bands and keeping track of whos viewed a property and who has issues that the landlord needs to be contacted about. Running a lettings agency is a complicated and time-consuming business, and installing the right software could allow you to improve your time management by:

Automatically updating all files associated with a single landlord

Giving you full accounting facilities

Integrating diaries, allowing you to issue letters promptly

Speeding up the process of uploading properties to your website

Providing comprehensive reporting for clients

If you think that your time at work would be better spent with clients than with paperwork, then you should consider property rental software for your agency.

How can I save money?

Although there will obviously be a cost associated with acquiring the rental management software, you will make savings in the long run. You may find that you dont need as many staff for the business to run properly, or that your employees can spend more time marketing properties and securing tenants than they could previously. You may save on staff training costs and on staff turnover, because you are removing the more mundane elements of the job.

Top 5 19 LCD Monitors On The Market

February 28th, 2011 by admin

When you are considering a 19 LCD monitor for your computer, you want to make sure you get the best. When looking at the top 5 19 monitors on the market, it is important to find those that are quick and helpful in terms of office production. Price, function, and a number of other factors can influence which monitors are in the top 5, but this list will at least give you a starting point.

The first of the top 5 19 LCD monitors on the market is the LG Electronics Flatron L1950B. With a resolution of 1280 by 1024 and several available adjustments, this is a great monitor for anyway. It has an easy to use height adjustment feature to keep it at eye level as you work. Also, this very slim and flat monitor gives a great looking image that is easy on the eyes and helps prevent fatigue.

The second LCD flat screen monitor to make its way into the top five is the Dell UltraSharp 1905FP. This monitor comes in with a resolution of 1280 by 1024 with a number of available adjustments to that you can have it just how you like it. It also includes three 2.0 USB ports and a full range of adjustments of the physical settings. It is easy to use and offers a great picture.

Third on the top 5 19 LCD monitors on the market is the ViewSonic VP930b. With a good resolution, again, at 1280 by 1024, the ViewSonic offers smooth and easy to use physical adjustments that allow you to comfortable with the monitor. The monitor even has a very nice stable stand that keeps it in place and makes the physical adjustments easier.

The fourth on the list ist he NEC MultiSync 90GX2. The resolution on this one is, like with most of these, 1280 by 102. The adjustment is limited to tilt and swivel, but in most cases the height is actually pretty good. The screen is a glossy design that makes text easy to read and contrast prime. Scrolling through screen menus is easy so that picture adjustment is simple and quick for anyone.

Finally, in the top 5 19 LCD monitors on the market is the Hyundai ImageQuest Q90U. Limited in adjustment to just tilt, the resolution is the same as all the rest at 1280 by 1024. There are two easy to use and reach USB 2.0 ports on this model. Three is a low response time to the monitor, but it does not really cause any problems in general use. Overall, it is still a strong monitor that you can get for about 40% less than the other models on the list.

Overall, looking at the top 5 19 LCD monitors on the market can help you decide what will work best for you. In your home office, at work, or for fun these monitors are going to be easier on your eyes and better for space management. You will be glad you took the time to equip yourself with a flat screen LCD.

Repair Your Computer For Free

February 25th, 2011 by admin

I just read an article about a lady whose computer was deluged by adware. It was such a problem that she spent thousands of dollars on computer repair fees to try to clean up her computer. The said thing is that she could have restored her computer by herself in less than a few hours and for free.

Somewhere down the line, there will be problems with your computer (adware, spyware, viruses, good software gone bad, etc,). Obviously, you should use protection software to prevent as much as possible. However, you will most likely eventually find yourself in a mess. Relax! Don’t worry.

Don’t spend thousands of dollars on a computer guy to fix your computer if it breaks down. The first rule of thumb is, dont spend more than $300, which would buy you a new computer today. But don’t throw away your computer yet — there is another solution.

If you are unable to access programs like MS Office and Quicken you may have a hardware problem, or your data may be so corrupted that you may have to call in a computer expert to get to it and he may not be able to access it in a cost effective way. Decide ahead of time how much your data is worth to you and find out how much you will pay the expert.

If you can still access your data, try the following:
First, back up all the saved data from programs like MS Office and Quicken. Make sure you have the original program discs because later you will need to reload these programs, and any backed up data. Then, just reload your Windows XP operating system (or upgrade to Windows XP). Bypass any warnings it gives you about your existing data. It will wipe your computer clean and you can start again. Go online and load the FREE security programs listed below. Then load the programs you wish to re-install and then their backed up data. Your computer will run like brand new (or better!). Warning! You will lose everything on your computer when you install Windows XP, and all the programs have to be re-loaded.

Here is the plan.

1) Starting now if it is not too late, you should be saving your important files and data to a disk or better yet to an online file folder. The online file folder sign-up can be found in the godaddy e-mail area. This way your files and data are safer. I enjoy accessing my files remotely from any computer as well. You should also neatly save and organize your important software so it is easy to reload.
2) Reload or load for the first time Windows XP Home edition or Professional.
3) Now download for FREE Microsoft Defender Anti-Spyware from microsoft.com.
4) Now download for FREE Avast Anti-virus.

These three work great together. You can find great information on in the free stuff forum at dealking.com. They list many of the above solutions.

I even suggest for older computers that are running sluggishly to load Windows XP right now to clean it up your system and make it work faster before problems occur. Your computer will work like new. CAUTION: You will lose everything when you re-load the Windows XP on you computer, but that is good if you have a bunch of junk. SAVE YOUR IMPORTANT ITEMS FIRST.

I did the above on 2 older Dells. One was plagued by an overload of junk and adware that popped up constantly. The other was just old and slow. I loaded the new Windows XP and started from scratch, and they work even better than the brand new Dells at my office that are loaded with a paid McAfee security package. McAfee seems to try to trick you into paying twice for the subscription, but the above solution is free and does the same thing.

Disclaimer: I am not an expert on any of the above, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night. For hardware problems or to restore data, you may need a computer guy (expert). Also, you may have a computer guy who is very cost effective and efficient (they are around), but there are just as many that spend to much time and money (yours) to fix something their way.

Discount Toner Cartridges:Low Prices, High Quality

February 20th, 2011 by admin

Just because someone says cheap toner, that does not mean cheap quality. In fact, you can get toner at a much cheaper price without sacrificing the quality and quantity of print you’ve become accustomed to… It’s not that hard.

Did you know most people pay seven times as much for their laser toner cartridges as they do for their laser printer? If you purchase name brand toner cartridges to replace your original toner cartridge, I’m talking about you. Either you do not know about discount toner cartridges ore you don’t understand exactly how they can help you reduce your printing cost.

A discount toner cartridge is a cheap toner cartridge. Sometimes it’s called a compatible toner cartridge. Whatever the case, they are cheap to buy, but they produce both quality and quantity of print pages.
A discount toner cartridge is made from all new parts. It is made to the very same specification for your laser printer. These toner cartridges are as good or better than your original cartridge. They will have the best warranty in the printer industry.

Many people think a cheap discount toner cartridge will void their printer warranty. It won’t. Besides, it is against the law.

Others think a cheap toner cartridge will somehow damage their printer. In reality, there is very little a toner cartridge can do to damage your printer. Although it is very unlikely, a toner cartridge could leak. If so, simply clean the printer and replace the cartridge… By the way, a discount toner cartridge is normally guaranteed for at least one year. If you had a problem, which isn’t likely, you would get a replacement toner cartridge at no cost to you.

Some printer owners feel the quality of print won’t be as good. I’ve never had the problem in over fifteen years. The quality and quantity has been exceptional.

Still others feel that a cheap toner cartridge won’t print as many pages. My experience has been the opposite. I’ve actually been able to print more pages per cartridge using discount toner cartridges than I could print with my original toner cartridge. (See the home page for details.)

Honestly, I was hesitant to buy a discount toner cartridge. I though it would be a lot of hassles. My experience is that reputable discount toner companies provide high quality printing. I have never sacrificed quality or quantity.

However, you need to learn for yourself. It only takes five minutes. Check out several reliable online printer companies. There are many listed on this site. Be sure to include the companies our Editors feel are the best suppliers of discount toner cartridges.
Once you visit a few sites, compare a few prices, check the product warranty and money back guarantee, youll quickly learn that cheap toner doesnt mean cheap quality.

Protect Your PC Against Catastrophe

February 11th, 2011 by admin

Backing up the hard drive on your home computer is like flossing your teeth-everyone knows they should do it but few people do so regularly.

According to a recent study from Dallas-based Parks Associates, a market research and consulting company, more than one-third of consumers don’t back up their digital documents and content at all, putting nearly 30 million households at risk for catastrophic data loss. By postponing the backup of your computer’s hard drive, you may risk the loss of files that represent irreplaceable memories such as baby photos or wedding videos, digital music collections or critical data such as financial records or tax returns.

Hard drives are the computer component most likely to fail. It is not a question of if a hard drive will fail, but when. The cost of recovering a crashed drive is remarkably expensive, typically falling between $600 and $4,000-depending on the extent of work involved and the urgency of turning around the recovery.

M. Fahim Siddiqui, Chief Executive Officer, Sereniti, Inc., a home and small office computer networking and security solutions provider, recommends taking the following steps often to secure files on your computer:

• Select a backup system-Files can be backed up by copying them to an external storage device, commonly called Network Attached Storage or NAS, to a CD-ROM, DVD or a USB memory device.

• Back up regularly-The more often you download music, photos or video or save documents, the more frequently you should back up the computer.

• Back up all your files-Users often back up only a small set of files, without realizing how much valuable information is stored on the entire hard drive; for early backups, users should ensure that the entire hard drive is copied.

• Make sure your backup is secure-Users should check their backup device regularly to make sure that their archives are complete and useable.

• Use an automated backup device. Managing backups can get complicated, since it requires managing schedules, file locations and storage; to make backups easy, use an automatic backup device.

• System restore-Learn how to do a “system restore” on your computer, which, in the event of a major problem, may enable you to retrieve data on your machine by restoring the programs, settings and files on it to the way they were days or weeks earlier. WindowsXP includes this within the Accessories programs.

One way to expedite the backup of single or multiple home computers is to have a central backup system that is attached to all the computers in the home. Sereniti’s EasyCare360 is a subscription PC and network support service that includes 80GB of network storage with automatic backup, wireless router and secure Internet Gateway that can automatically back up any computers on the home network.

The Sony VAIO keeps on improving

February 9th, 2011 by admin

The best of the Sony VAIO laptops are known for coming with very high-quality components, and the current range doesnt disappoint. The processors are Intel Core Duo (Intels latest dual-core processor), Fujitsu supply the hard disks and Samsung the memory no cheap knockoffs from the Far East make it into Sonys laptops.

Each laptop also comes with a special kind of Sony screen, called X-Brite, that makes the image on the screen appear brighter and clearer. These screens are widescreen, to allow you to view films easily on your laptop and have a wider area to work with when youre just using the computer normally.

Each series of models within the VAIO range is identified by two letters, such as AR or TX. They all have quite similar specifications, always keeping up with the latest advances in technology, with the main difference being the weight and size.

The heaviest VAIO is the 17-inch AR series, which still only weighs about 4 kilos. If youre looking for something really light, Sony make an 11-inch laptop, the TX, which weighs just over one kilo, and an even tinier one, the UX, which weighs under a kilo.

Sony is also known for the quality of the bundled software that they include with their VAIO laptops (although you can choose to leave it out if you want, and get a discount). This includes Windows XP Professional, other Microsoft software such as Office, and then Sonys own Movie Shaker (a movie-editing program, like Windows Movie Maker or iMovie), SonicStage (a music management program, like iTunes) and PictureGear (a photo album program, like iPhoto or Picasa). It is clear that Sony intends for VAIO laptops to be used as part of a larger Sony entertainment system, and often builds-in software that can be used to connect Portable Playstations, Minidisc players, Memory Sticks and other Sony devices.

Projector Buying Tips: The Best Projector Shopping Guide

February 3rd, 2011 by admin

Technology has always been known to make peoples lives better. In fact, some surveys said that 8 out of 10 people who were interviewed showed significant representation of people who were relieved to have the best technology in their lives.

One of the primary reasons why technology is deemed as lifes enhancers is because it can unleash the limits set upon the rigidity of previous inventions.

This goes to show that with the new trend of technology, people can expect a better life because it provides a hundred and one ways of making the impossible doable.

Take for example the case of projectors. Before, projectors are known to be used in movie theaters and during business presentations or seminars.

But with the continuous technological advancement and development, projectors are now known to be used even at home. This is especially true to those who want to create a home-based theater of their own.

Technically speaking, projectors work in a way that the visual aspects that are limited on the tube of a television are directly converted into a bigger screen. This is where the graphics and images are unleashed on a bigger view and where space is no longer constrained in a tube.

However, not all projectors are created equal. Therefore, projectors may vary from one model to another. So the only way to get the best item is to know how to effectively buy a good one.

Here is a list of some tips that consumers may use when buying projectors.

1. Know the available type

Basically, there are only tow types of video projectors: the LCP, or the liquid crystal projection, and the tubed. Both of them can function well as far as projection is concerned.

Also, these two kinds of projectors are unique on each sense of functionality that may influence the presentation and setting up of the item.

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages as well. So it is best to do some research regarding this matter so you would only get the best kind of projector.

2. Decide on the magnitude and weight of the projector

There are three available categories of projectors. These are the conference room projectors, ultralights, and the fixed installation projectors.

Each category has its own purpose. So it is better to know the main purpose of using the projector so that you will be able to decide on what weight and size should be bought.

3. The price

As mentioned, not all projectors are created equal, that is why, they may be priced according to the level of their functionality and the way they were manufactured.

Generally, projectors re priced between $1,300 and $9,000. Though, 75% of the available projectors in the market today greatly fall under the $3,500 to $20,000 price range.

The main factors that influence the way projectors are priced are brightness and resolution. Hence, the higher the resolution and the brighter the projector can display images, the higher the price.

4. Consider your needs

When buying projectors, it really pays when the buyer knows what he needs before going to the store. This will make the buying process a lot easier and faster, avoiding the perils of motivations made by persistent salespeople.

The bottom line is that the quality of images that people should expect is reflected upon how they buy items like this. Hence, it is important to always have the initiative to research on the things that bring about the main concept of projectors.

The best classroom training solution : computer rentals

January 31st, 2011 by admin

For classroom training, renting computers, sound systems and projectors from a computer rental company is the easiest and most cost efficient way to coordinate corporate training initiatives with the least amount of headaches.

Save Time and Money with Training: Computer, Projector, and Sound System Equipment Rentals

Even if you own all the equipment you need for a computer training session you will save money by using the installation services of a computer rental company. Computer rental companies coordinate everything technical so you can concentrate on the execution of your computer training program.

Trainers can become technicians very quickly when training computer equipment doesn’t work properly.

Training directors know how difficult it can be to ‘work out all the bugs’ before, during and after each training program.

Execution is the key to training results and efficiencies. If 20 f the computers don’t work, you can have a training disaster on your hands.

Add up all the costs and distractions from your computer training goals. Put a value on your time, say $100 per hour. Now multiply the time you and your staff spent on hardware setup, delivery, installation, maintenance and removal. Keep in mind that all computers need to have the same configuration to maximize productivity.

Here is a quick checklist of common tasks that need to be accomplished on every computer training session.

1. Install same versions of operating systems and training software

2. Install sound system, projectors, printers

3. Run network cables

4. Tape down all wires

5. Connect to network services

6. Test each computer

7. Troubleshoot installation problems

8. Diagnose and fix all problems

9. Service equipment during training sessions including having spare equipment available.

10. At the end of the computer training, disconnect, pickup and return all the equipment to various locations in your company.

How many man-hours would it take for you and your company’s staff to accomplish the classroom training setup, service and teardown?

Here are some things to find out if you use a computer rental company for computer training sessions:

Find out if the computer rental company has any experience with the classroom training hardware and software you need. If they do often they can remember all the pieces and parts that easily get overlooked by a non-experienced rental company.

Some rental companies will install software or ‘image load’ all rental computers prior to delivery.

For example, you can have your training program software and the OS of your choice installed on all desktop or laptop computers!

Have the computer rental technicians test each application by following your testing directions. This ensures that your training software will work as planned.

Make sure delivery, setup is planned well in advance of computer training sessions.

Make sure you are covered with an on-site service program! Ask for extra, spare equipment can even be included for your computer training class! Often you can get a spare unit for free!

Focus on your core competency…your computer training session. Don’t be distracted by hardware and software problems. Let the experts focus on their core competency; your computer training hardware installation and management!

Data Storage Media A Guide to Selecting Media For

Data Storage Media A Guide to Selecting Media For Storing and Backing Up Computer Data

Data, or information stored on your computer, can either be held on fixed disk drives inside the computer or on removable media such as CD’s that can be inserted and removed. Removable media can be used to transfer files between computers or to backup the data already existing on fixed disk drives. There are three types of removable media: Magnetic, Optical and Flash.

Magnetic Storage

Magnetic Storage: Hard disks, floppy disks and digital audiotape are examples of Magnetic storage. They operate through a read/write head, which creates and reads magnetic impressions on the disk.

The downside

The magnetic impression only lasts for around five years
The capacity of most removable magnetic disks is too low for many types of files

Optical storage

Optical Storage holds information in digital form that is written and read by a laser. All CD and DVD devices are examples of this.

The upside

Increased capacity: one Optical disc can store the same amount of data as over 500 diskettes
Durability: they last up to seven times as long as Magnetic forms of storage

Flash Memory (Solid-State Removable Storage)

Solid-state memory (or Flash memory) is a high-performance plug-and-play storage device that contains no moving parts. It is found in digital cameras, video game consoles and digital audio players. You can use it in the form of USB Flash Drives to transfer or backup data. Flash memory is small, light and fast.

Backup

Backup is the copying of files onto portable media so that if your computer crashes, data wont be lost in oblivion. Backup is usually routine in large businesses but is often neglected by individual users. Some suggest backing up data files and duplicating your hard drive weekly. It takes around 45 minutes to backup a 500-megabyte hard disk.

There are two options- Local or Internet backup. The following is a list of Local backup options. Most of these also double as devices used to transfer data between computers.
Diskettes
Zip Drives
CD’s
DVD’s
Flash Drive

Internet Backup

Another backup option is sending your files to an Internet site for safekeeping. If your computer crashes you can simply download them from the site. Here are a few examples of such sites:

Backup Defender- www.backupdefender.co.nz
My Backup- www.mybackup.co.nz

N.B. The author does not recommend or endorse any of the above service providers.

Diskettes and Zip Drives

Diskette

A Diskette is a 3.5-inch removable magnetic disk. The older version, the floppy disk, is 5.25 inches square and flexible. Copying to a diskette is quick and economical.

Ideal for

Those who use their PC for personal finance – the diskette enables you to retrieve checkbook balances etc.
Projects that need to be continuously backed up such as a film script, as it is a cheap alternative.

Not so good for

Some newer computer and laptop models that do not have a diskette or floppy drive installed.
Large amounts of data as diskettes dont have a great storage capacity

Zip Drives

A Zip drive is a small, square shaped magnetic disk that is ideal for backing up your PC. The 100-megabyte size holds the equivalent of 70 floppy diskettes. They also come in a 250-megabyte size

Ideal for

Duplicating your entire disc drive
Archiving
Storing graphic images or other large files
Transferring large files
Keeping certain data separate from files on your hard disk

The downside

They seem to be a fleeting technology – most computers do not have a Zip Disc drive installed and opinion varies on how long they will be around for.

Compact Disks

There are different standards of CD’s that have different capabilities. Just to confuse us they are recognized by seemingly similar acronyms; CD-R, CD-RW, CD+RW, DDCD and E-CD.

CD-R

CD-R (Compact Disc – Recordable) is a CD that can be recorded to only once. It usually holds 74 minutes of audio or 650 MB of data, although newer versions hold up to 80 minutes of audio (700 MB of data). If your PC has CD burning software and a compatible CD-R or CD-RW drive, the CD-R can be used in the same way as a diskette. However unlike a diskette it cannot be deleted or overwritten. Look out for CD-Rs that have an additional protective layer which make them less susceptible to damage caused through scratching.
Ideal for

Making music CD’s
Storing photos
Storing permanent data

Not so good for

Transferring files as they can only be used once

CD-RW/CD+RW

A CD-RW (Compact Disc Rewritable) and CD+RW can be recorded onto as many times as desired. Data can be overwritten and erased. Other than this, the CD-RW is identical to the CD-R. If it wasn’t for their finite durability CD-RWs and CD+RWs could be reused endlessly.

Ideal for

Transferring files
Holding temporary data

Not so good for

Holding important permanent files-in case they are accidentally deleted

Double Density CD (DDCD)
This disc has a much greater storage capacity than an average CD-R or CD-RW.

Ideal for
Backing up
Storing archival data

Enhanced CD
Enhanced CD (E-CD) is an audio CD with CD-ROM data added. CD-ROM data is added in the space not taken by audio. Recording artists can use this to include videos, lyrics, interviews or promo material. The E-CD can be played on a CD player but to view additional material you need access to a multimedia-capable device, such as a CD-i player, DVD-ROM, or CD-ROM drive.

Bridge Disks
A CD-Bridge disc holds extra information on a CD-ROM XA track. The disc can be played on either a CD-i player attached to a television, or a CD-ROM XA drive attached to a computer. Software such as Photo or a Karaoke CD player can provide lots of fun with the Bridge Disk.

DVD (Digital Versatile Disk): More than movies

Although DVD’s have become more associated with video, they can also hold audio and computer data; hence their name Digital Versatile Disk. Like the CD, a DVD is a 120-mm by 1.2mm thick disk. However the DVD has more tracks than a CD so holds far more data. CD’s have an unvarying storage capacity of 750MB, whereas DVD’s store up to 17GB.

A range of acronyms is also used to distinguish between the different types and capabilities of DVD’s available. These include DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-Audio.
DVD-ROM

DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disc – Read Only Memory) is similar to a movie DVD, but is designed for computers. The DVD-ROM stores data in the same way that the CD-ROM does and is used in the DVD-ROM drive of your PC.

The upside

Larger storage space hold more data than a CD
Can be filled with nearly everything; video, music or computer specific data
A base speed of 1.32 megabytes/sec

The downside

Many older computers do not have a DVD-Rom drive installed
Can be recorded on only once

DVD-Audio

DVD-Audio (DVD-A) is designed for audio data and high-quality music. Its storage capacity is seven times that of a CD and provides at least twice the sound quality. Like the Enhanced CD, DVD-A can contain other data, providing the listener with extra information such as lyrics or images. DVD-A is predicted by many to replace the standard audio CD in the music industry.

DVD-R

Like the CD-R, the DVD-R (Digital Versatile Disc-Recordable) can be recorded on once.

The upside

A DVD-R can contain an assortment of information; video, text, audio and computer data

A DVD-R can be played on your normal DVD video player but remember, if you have additional data not of the same format e.g. video and audio together, you will need a DVD-ROM or Multimedia player of some kind

A DVD-R is read at the same speed as commercially made DVD’s

DVD-RW and DVD+RW
Similar to the CD-RW, a DVD-RW or DVD+RW (Digital Versatile Disc Rewritable) can be recorded on, rewritten and erased multiple times. Other than this they are identical to the DVD-R.
DVD minus and plus are just different versions with the same functionality.

The Future of CD/DVD Storage

The majority of the technology industry predicts that soon DVDs, with their larger storage capacity and faster access time, will replace CDs. DVD-ROM drives are likely to be sold with new computer systems in the way that CD-ROM drives once were. However we are always on the cusp of newer technologies, such as the HD-ROM.

HD-ROM (High Density-Read Only Memory)

HD-ROM uses a more precise particle beam to write data. This enables information to be written on more durable materials such as metal so storage is virtually permanent. HD-ROM has hundreds of times the storage capacity of the CD-ROM.

Flash Drives

A Flash drive is a small portable memory stick that holds anywhere from 1Mb to 1GB of data. It is surprisingly lightweight and is often worn around the neck or carried as a funky key chain. They are compatible with any PC that has USB port and with Mac OS 9 and OS X, Windows 2000 and XP or Linux 2.4.17.

The upside

Durable – more so than CD’s or DVD’s
No need for batteries or a separate power source
Convenient – your computer should recognize the additional drive as soon as you insert it into the USB port
Ideal for backup
Larger storage capacity then many other portable devices
More portable than ZIP drives, CD’s and Diskettes
Quick transfer rate (approx. 1Mb/sec)
Edit, rewrite, delete as many times as desired
Help desk personnel can use Flash Drives as a portable toolkit that includes system updates and recovery tools.

The downside

More expensive than other portable devices
Viruses – The portability and compatibility of the Flash Drive increases the chance of spreading viruses. In many cases viruses carried by a Flash Drive will not be detected as most antivirus software is reactive and only recognizes known viruses
Theft – a Flash Drive can make it easier for data to be stolen from an unlocked PC
Little Security – the size and weight of the Flash drive makes it very easy to misplace. Most have little or no security features and data is accessed easily. Some Flash Drives do have built in security; either a password or in some cases a finger print system – but this comes at a price.

Physician Data Entry Is The Solution – Technology Information

January 28th, 2011 by admin

How a group of physicians were persuaded to manipulation information entrance point of care electronic checkup records to cut costs and increase efficiency. The dream of computerized medical checkup records has been discussed at length by physicians and in the journals. Yet with extensive review of many of these MD entering electronic medical examination phonograph recording programs (PDE-EMRs), we at New to(p) United Mexican States Orthopaedic Associates (NMOA) were not sure that the engineering was ready for the masses of physicians, many who were not willing to spend countless hours in training. And, taking 15-20 minutes of medico-computing device time to create a single medical exam note, as the standard big name products did, was an obstacle that we could not endure. One day in 1995, a local known as us and said that he was involved with ingress electronic health check disk (PDE-EMR) engineering science and wondered if we had the time to return a look at his plan, named the HUB Computing machine Checkup System. It was oriented approximately a health care manufacture modelling the Foresighted Pattern Guideline Modelling (FPG).

The local , Dr. Thomas Naegele, is a Family Praxis workings emergency rooms in Unexampled and Arizona hospitals. References remarked on his excellent aesculapian skills in the ER, so we decided to go ahead and meet with him. Naegele that we rich person two non-negotiable requirements for a PDE-EMR organization: (1) it must be ultimately flexible and adaptable to any of out clinical settings and, (2) capture by the cannot slow the process down. During his demonstration of the HUB Computing device Medical checkup System, we learned that Dr. Naegele is also a college-trained data processor systems analyst. We were amazed that this platform following the FPG modeling, though really simpleton, appeared to handle wholly situations within clinical and the business of . It looked like his system of rules would meet our requirements. Continued from page 1. At present tense, there is alone(p) 1 foresighted simulation and merely I object oriented applied science theoretical account. They the same product- HUB.

This is new and pioneering , so many people trying different approaches with a mixture of products and methods. The most popular computerized electronic disc is the transcriptionist-typed, dictated report. In some of these cases, physicians wealthy person access to these notes for either viewing or manipulation. What Type of Person Can Solve the Physician-Electronic computer Interface.

There is no clear-cut solution for PDE-EMR at represent. But after with the HUB arrangement and Dr. Naegele for the last 3 days, this may be what the diligence necessarily. Through many hours of with Dr. Naegele and his formal education in calculator systems analysis, his industriousness study is real impressive and seems to be the correct way to find the answer to this unsolved problem.

Naegele has been on PDE-EMR since 1983; he has been using computers since 1970. When he entered school in the summer of 1979, he already knew fourteen figurer languages and nine different estimator operating systems. Naegele clearly has superior skills in systems analysis and has the ability to realize big and complicated systems, along with the ability to takings paper/by hand systems and develop them into systems. The FPG Modeling is well thought-out, but it can yield old age to fully realise that it puts the complete power of the into the hands of the at the point of care.

Spyware Remover – Choosing the Right Software

January 24th, 2011 by admin

Spyware is software that installs itself onto our computers without our knowledge. You have probably been a victim of spyware if you notice changes in your computer such as extreme slowness or a change in your browser settings that you have not made. Spyware can cause a lot of little annoyances to your computer and the best thing to do is remove it fast and prevent it from happening with a good spyware removal software.

Choosing a good spyware remover can take a bit of time as you want to choose one that is going to be easy to use and get the job done. The first place to conduct your research is by searching for software reviews online. Reviews can be helpful if they are written by actual users who have really put the software through its paces. Beware of the reviews that find nothing wrong with the software as they are probably only pushing the product to make a sale. A good review will point out its strengths as well as its weaknesses.

The criteria that you should use to determine whether or not the spyware software is of good quality are relatively simple. First off, is it user friendly? There is nothing worse than installing the software and being overwhelmed with a ton of features that will take you months to figure out. There are many good programs available that keep the average computer user in mind – keeping the software as user friendly as possible.

You will also want to consider how well the software runs in the background. A good spyware remover will hum along unnoticed in the background without slowing down your computer, allowing you to continue working while it is doing its job. Check to see if the software also provides monitoring for spyware in “real time.” This is critical as there are new spyware programs invading the internet every day.

It will also help to find out if the spyware software has won any awards or has been recognized for its product. Any good spyware removal product worth its salt will readily admit to not being able to clean up the spyware on your computer in just one use. It may take several runs of the software to achieve this as well as several software updates. If a program claims they can achieve this after one run, they are more than likely making false claims. The software should also download regular updates at least every few days.

Customer service is also a huge deciding factor. If you run into an issue that is just beyond your capabilities, it is good to know that you can call customer service and have them walk you through your issue. A good customer support team will contact you within a matter of hours via email or by phone.

Besides installing your spyware software as a preventative measure, also remember to avoid downloading software that you are not sure of. If you don’t need it or it isn’t a legitimate product, chances are its only purpose is to embed spyware onto your computer.

Online Backup: The Simple Value

January 24th, 2011 by admin

There are many reasons to use online backup. The simple fact is that your computer could get invaded or destroyed in minutes and it can happen completely and suddenly as well. The fact is that more and more people are falling victim to this type of occurrence every day. What happens is that it leaves you without all that you know and need and leaves you without any way of fixing it. Online backup is the perfect solution though because it allows you the ability to save whatever it is that you need to without thought or worry about anything happening to it.

Online backup should be thought of as a file cabinet for all of your important information. By using online databases to store this information, you are safeguarding it from anything that may happen to your computers hard drive or memory. You can store just about any type of information that you need to and it is completely and utterly safe. Most information that is saved in this manner is safeguarded from other people as well. You can make sure of this by not providing your personal information nor your username and password to retrieve it.

Why do you need online backup? Well, there are many reasons. And, there are many things that you can store in there. For example, you may find that there are business clients as well as a number of corporations that store their information on their computers. In these cases, a crash can be awful. In the case of the personal ecommerce entrepreneur, important contact information for clients as well the product lists and availabilities are all necessary and yet they too can fall victim to a crash if they are stored on the computer. Online backup systems can help avoid all of this information loss as well as much more.

Strengthen Your Website Content With Online Database Access

January 23rd, 2011 by admin

Website content, as articles, has taken center stage as web publishers scramble to differentiate their online offers. As both the quantity and quality of articles have accelerated, so too have online directories. These directories often resemble mere lists, but they can be powerful content additions that serve to deepen the value of the overall selling proposition by helping users in locating critical, related resources that for the visitor is otherwise much too time consuming.

On today’s websites, it is not uncommon to find online databases designed to provide the data-hungry website visitor with more comprehensive database management functions which are far superior to list-style directories. At a minimum, we find web-driven data pages that include search and display functions which facilitate quick and easy manipulation of back-end SQL databases. Many sites also include options to add, edit, delete, print, and even download data directly from the database to the desktop, all enabled with multiple levels of login/password security. While this is not revolutionary, the technical expertise required to build database-driven web pages has been the domain of more sophisticated online publishers who not only owned the back end database outright, but possessed the required expertise to build and maintain such access for their loyal constituents.

But that has all changed. A flurry of new, low-cost desktop tools have entered the scene, leveling the playing field for the budget-strapped internet marketer who, until recently, was limited to throwing in a basic “telephone book” style directory in an attempt to bolster his value proposition.

Three such tool categories warrant a closer look:

Web data extraction tools costing less than $400 enable web content, as “repeating data”, to be easily extracted to MS Excel, MS Access, or virtually any SQL database in high volume. This data serves to build, or at least augment the publisher’s’s new online database. (Ideally, one should first obtain permission from the website owner before scraping large volumes of data).

The next challenge is to manipulate the collected data now resident in multiple files, and often in disparate data formats. Though list processing applications have long been available, lower cost tools now offer powerful merge/purge capabilities without the need to import and export files in the process. Some simple routines and the data is ready to upload to the database on the host web server.

Finally, the publisher builds the web pages which access the database. Perhaps most exciting is the arrival of a wide variety of desktop code generators, many which are open source, that allow a non-programmer to build customized web pages that rival the database search, display, add, edit, delete and download capabilities previously reserved for the more technical publisher. No longer is the web publisher required to know a single SQL command to accomplish this feat. Amazingly, most of these tools generate pure PHP or PERL code. All that remains is to upload the generated code to the host database and the project is complete. The website now houses a “living, breathing” database, to the extent that the publisher desires to maintain fresh data.

One of the more common, and simple applications of database-driven web pages is to build versatile Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) pages. Questions and answers can be queried by category (e.g. pricing, product) or keyword (e.g. sporting goods), while enriching the users support experience.

How can such newfound capabilities be monetized? The possibilities are plenty. Limited datasets can be made freely searchable and viewable for casual visitors, though it’s usually wise to request that the user register even if membership is free. The idea is to prime the pump, getting casual users to thirst for more comprehensive database access. Extended and full database access can be reserved only for paid members.

Never has a publisher had such power to build data-rich content that can serve to immediately strengthen his unique selling sales proposition. In the old paradigm, he who owned the data held all the power. Today, data is everywhere for the internet entrepreneur. By applying the latest database tools, any website publisher can now cement the most loyal of customer relationships by ensuring that his customer has a reason to keep coming back.

Web visitors have a difficult enough time sorting out the perceived sameness of online offerings. For the content builder, there are few better methods to establish and lock in immediate credibility with customers than to implement an easily accessible database that underscores the site’s overall content theme.

Crash Testing New Products – Performance Testing Guide

January 22nd, 2011 by admin

When it comes to new products, there is always that one final task that needs to be done before the said product can actually be approved or not for by the target market. Road testing, otherwise known as performance testing, is actually a good way for the manufacturers of all sorts of products especially in the field of technology to be able to obtain the objective kind of feedback that they need from their prospective buyers in order to ensure the success or failure of their products or services. Companies need this kind of software application because they can obtain answers about performance testing related concerns that can make or break their company.

1. Know Where You Stand

The idea of this whole performance testing software is for companies to be able to have a good background when it comes to their potential customers concerns, feedback as well as suggestions about a certain product. This is why there are so many benefits that a company can reap from the performance testing application software, that is a great breakthrough in the business and IT technology.

2. Improve Your Product

No matter how great a product may be, people will still have some hesitations concerning the product where in one way or another we would want to know some information about the product. With performance testing, you can provide customers with sound advice about a certain product to help them decide if it is actually worth their money or not, or at least reassure them that the product they purchase has been checked that it works.

3. Go Direct To Customers

Technology related magazines as well as IT feature programs are sometimes a bit unreliable when it comes to learning the inside scoop about a certain new product because some companies actually just send out press releases for the media to be able to just feed the public with some marketing ploys by companies that are disguised as news items, media people actually feed this to the market since aside from getting incentives from companies for doing them a favor, rehashing press releases into news items is actually a worn out practice in journalism (if you can still regard it as such). Moreover, companies want to also take part of the performance testing technology since it will enable them to further reach out to their target market more by being able to find out the things that they are actually interested in.

4. Advance Your Product Knowledge

Also, the performance testing advantage that a lot of companies can enjoy if they avail of performance testing is that they will also be able to get some inside information as well as some product knowledge on a certain product that can only come from performance testing. The knowledge, as well as the inside information on these products, are incredibly valuable since many points in the product life cycle even from the development to its marketing and up to technical support will be closely watched and they will give you that precious information if you avail of the performance testing service.

MySpace Layouts quick solution for fun

January 19th, 2011 by admin

When a company launches their website, they look forward to feedback from their customers and others who pass by. The main aim of having a portal is to reach out to people across the globe and make use of modern technology, which is why MySpace layouts has been created. Some pages have limited information while others have pages of information, updates, and images about the company or their products and services. Similarly, when surfing on the net, there are many web pages we come across; some of them are colorful while others are plain and somber looking. The ones that are filed with colours are the ones that attract us the most. This is because our eyes react to colours and brighten up, an effect you can achieve by using MySpace layouts. Whereas when we see plain white pages, which dont have anything interesting, like whats available on MySpace layouts, we feel depressed or get serious. There are various companies that offer some interesting background images and icons that can be used, one of hem being MySpace layouts which is a treasure chest for any website creator. MySpace is the parent company, which is a social networking website that has branched out into having their own layouts, glitter text and various other accessories to light up a page.

MySpace layouts is the name of the site, and as the name goes, it has a million options for your web page. There are some designs here on MySpace layouts that are very trendy and cool looking, with vibrant colours and interesting patterns. In case a person wishes to have a site that reflects their creativity, but are not familiar with html tags or how to create their own, they can use one of the MySpace layouts from the site. Having a fun background and bright colours will help give your page a makeover and enable increase in traffic. Job offers will also soon start pouring in all thanks to MySpace layouts. People, who pass by your web page, will linger for more than a minute, having seen the colors or flowers from MySpace layouts on your site. This is one way of grabbing attention and getting noticed.

Unlike various other sites, MySpace layouts has layouts and backgrounds that are all pre-made and come with a unique html code. This makes it easy for the user, they need to just copy paste this code from MySpace layouts onto their page, and voila, watch how their site transforms into a work of beautiful art. There will be no need to change the content on your page to fit into the MySpace layouts background; you simply have to change the colors to make them more visible. One cannot have a black backdrop and a brown font colour; the text will just not be visible.

Starting a web site Steps to Success

January 17th, 2011 by admin

Starting a successful website isnt an easy task and requires a fair amount of planning before beginning the project. Here are a few simple tips that will get you on your way!

What type of website?

There are many types of websites you can create; such as Blogs, forums, directories, and galleries! Its best to create a website based around something you enjoy and know about.

If you are launching a business website its a good idea to speak with a web design specialist, a professional looking website is key to a businesss online success. Dont be afraid to invest a little, you will reap the rewards.

Choosing a Web Host

A reliable web host is important no matter you websites purpose, downtime and technical issues turn away many visitors, and isnt worth pain. Budget is important but dont be fooled by the web hosts that are practically giving their services away, they are often oversold and will result in problems with out a doubt.

Choose a web host that offers what you need at a reasonable market price, you will find the support level is often much higher as they can afford to pay quality staff.

Many web hosts offer the automatic installation of many great scripts such as content management systems, forums, galleries and much more!

Selecting your Domain Name

Ensure you get a domain name that matches your website! Have a think before you purchase, your web host will usually offer domain registration services bundled with your web hosting plan.

If you are unfamiliar with web design its a good idea to start a website based on some popular content management systems, you should find these options and software packages available in your web hosting control panel.

Install and become familiar with their operation.

Adding Content

Fresh, relevant content is important to any websites success; it will keep visitors coming back. Starting a forum is hard so its a good idea to get your friends / associates in on the project to generate some discussion.

Promote your website

Its a good idea to get your link out there, submit to the search engines, and link from websites you visit. Once you are listed in the search engines your quality content should naturally draw users.

For business websites paid promotion is a great way to generate business leads.

Following these steps is a great way to ensure your websites success; no project is easy so with a little work you can have a popular (and profitable) website of your own!

Mobility And Security Part 1: SSL Based VPNs

January 13th, 2011 by admin

What does SSL and VPN mean?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol developed by Netscape to secure data transmission between a client and a server. It was soon adopted by the likes of Microsoft Internet Explorer and other leading web browsers, providing a secure means to transact data in an encrypted format over the web, most commonly seen with e-commerce sites taking credit card payments for purchases.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a private communications network usually used within a company or by several companies that have a need to share information over a public network. VPN traffic is carried over the Internet using standard (often insecure) protocols.

What is the fuss with SSL VPNs?

SSL VPN technology has been around for several years, but only in the past year has the market literally exploded with low cost purpose built devices. The likes of Juniper, Nortel and now even Cisco have developed these low cost SSL based VPN solutions for various business types including SMEs.

SSL VPNs work at the application layer. Unlike IPSEC VPNs they are far less complicated to setup, support and maintain. As they work with most modern web browsers no software is required to be configured and they are not restricted to a particular computer. Also, as almost all corporate networks globally, including those with stringent firewall policies, permit web traffic including the SSL port, SSL VPNs being utilized by mobile workers are almost guaranteed to work in every environment. This is one of the downfalls of the more common IPSEC VPN technology which struggles over NAT environments. One other benefit with SSL VPNs is it gives the administrator per-user access control to a strictly specified list of applications.

Summary of Benefits:

1. Low Total cost of ownership

2. End point Security in differing environments (e.g. if no Antivirus on mobile machine, only permit extranet access)

3. Clientless (web browser SSL VPN access for shared folders, applications & extranet resources)

4. On demand client for full network layer access

5. Helps secure thin client access in the public domain (Citrix, terminal services published on the web)

6. Per-user or per-group application list control

What should I do next?

1. Understand your companys goals and what you are trying to achieve from your VPN solution

2. Consider what applications and services you intend to provide over your VPN solutions and understand the VPN options available to you.

3. Understand the security and service requirements of your VPN Solution and determine which VPN products provide these

4. Consider if you should be implementing additional security safeguards to further protect your VPN solution

SSL based VPN solutions are now very affordable and they ensure mobile workers can access crucial company information from almost any device anywhere in the world. They ease simplicity and availability when implemented in a well planned and thought out manner and they help to achieve a trouble free environment for remotely accessing crucial data.

SSIs mobile and security specialists are available to provide mobile and security solutions for companies of all sizes covering consultancy, planning, deployment, support and user training.

Consumer Electronics

January 12th, 2011 by admin

Consumer electronics have become a major part of our everyday lives, whether we think so or not. You don’t have to be a tech freak to have most of your life somewhat dependant upon electronics. This dependency seems to grow more and more with each new generation as well. If you run through a typical day, you might notice just how many consumer electronics that you use. There are also many new devices coming out all of the time to fill the void that was lacking a device to fill it.

Most of us will start our day to the tune of an electric alarm clock. Then as we get ready in the morning we will use a couple of other devices ranging from an electric shaver to an electric iron. You may then heat up some breakfast in a microwave or toaster while the electric coffee maker brews a fresh pot. The point is that you have hardly started your day and most of the morning was spent using various electronics. With a normal work week most of us do not have time to manually do everything. Consumer electronics mainly fulfill two duties. They either provide a useful function and/or they entertain us.

Most of the electronics that fulfill a function of daily life are similar to the aforementioned products that you may use in the morning. Many others include things like refrigerators and washing machines. These appliances make everyday chores take a fraction of the time. Our electronics also make us more comfortable with climate control for our homes and water heaters for our faucets. You do not need to shop the latest products to be dependant upon electronics.

Besides consumer electronics that are used for everyday functions, there are ones that are purely for our interest and entertainment. MP3 player, portable gaming devices and camcorders all provide for entertainment everyday. There are also items like computers and cell phones that provide daily functions and entertainment. Our consumer electronics improve more every year to provide functionality and consumer satisfaction. More and more each year these products also fuse the gap between entertainment and functionality which promises them a place in our shopping carts.

Spyware Protection through Lowest User Access

January 12th, 2011 by admin

Many of the computers that are attached to the Internet are infected with some sort of Spyware or Adware type applications. These applications are designed to subject the user from anything from annoying pop up windows to the stealing of peoples identity. As time goes along these programs will only become more advanced and will cause even more problems for Internet Service Providers and System Administrators as these programs advance in functionality and become even harder to detect.

There is a simple measure you can take to prevent these programs from being able to access your system in the first place. Many experts recommend that you keep your system updated and ensure you have the latest Virus and Protection software up to date. You can even utilize a firewall, like the one that comes default with Windows XP, to combat these threats. These are great ideas, but there is something simpler you can do that will prove to be more effective at combating Spyware than all of these methods combined. This method is described as Lowest User Access or LUA.

By default most home computers only ever have one user account created and that is the account that first came with the computer. This account known as Owner or Administrator or sometimes even your name probably has Administrator privileges. What most do not know is an account with Administrator privileges is not needed for the majority of tasks you perform on your computer. These privileges are needed when you are setting up software or installing additional hardware to your computer, but for simple surfing the net and working in office applications do not require near this level of access.

Why is this fact being mentioned, well its because this is the main cause of Spyware and Virus infections on the majority of computers. Most computer owners are not even aware of this fact since the default accounts shipped on computers are usually in the Administrators group. This is by design since this reduces the amount of support calls the computer companies receive because people can not perform a certain task and they call for support as a result. If anyone can perform any task then that reduces the chance they will need to call the support desk which saves the computer company money.

There is no valid reason for the majority of users to ever need Administrator privileges to perform 90% of all tasks you will ever need to use your computer for accomplishing. You could just as effectively accomplish your daily tasks with an account that only requires user permissions. If everyone would do this then Spyware can be eliminated and it would not be profitable for people to write these programs. The reason for this was alluded to earlier. Since only the Administrator or Power User Level accounts can install software then at least one of these types of accounts is required for Spyware to install itself. If you are not logged on under and account with these elevated privileges, then the spyware can not install. This is a very easy protective measure to take and you can implement it in just a few minutes. Just right click My Computer and select manage. Then open up the users section and add your self a new lowest access user to your system and use that account to surf the net. You can always log onto your computer with the Administrator account if you need to install something new.

Medical Transcription (MT) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Software

January 9th, 2011 by admin

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) has revolutionized the healthcare industry in recent times. Many experts felt that EMR & Voice Recognition would totally replace Medical Transcription – however; the industry soon realized that transcription has certain advantages over point & click charting and many physicians preferred to dictate notes rather than document the data at the point of care themselves.

The most critical part of any Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is the method of data entry. EMR is about aggregation of patient encounter data at the point of care in order to provide a complete, accurate, and timely view of patient information. An electronic medical record is not just a typed record of the patient encounter, but an extremely useful decision support tool. The data can be entered into the EMR via any of the two general mechanisms: direct entry by the physician using point and click templates or transcription of dictated notes. Point and click template indicates that each data element, which is to be inserted, requires selection, navigation, point and click process for capturing patient information.

Transcriptions have been around for years for documenting patient encounters. A medical provider dictates the medical note into a phone or a recording device. The transcriptionist receives the dictation and transcribes it. It may be reviewed by the supervisor for checking errors. The final computerized file is then either emailed directly to the healthcare provider or the file is transferred to a web site and is later downloaded by the provider.
Each method has its pros and cons.
Point and Click Templates
Most EMR systems allow providers to generate clinical documentation, by selecting variable terms from pre-structured point-and-click templates. Users simply point and click to select appropriate choices from lists of choices to record a patient encounter. The end result would be a document that closely resembles a transcribed procedure note.

Advantages

* Completely customizable templates. The doctor can specify the layout of the template, which helps him to adjust the template as per his practice & procedure.
* Provide consistent, complete and accurate data. The chances of medical erros are reduced since the data is documented in customised forms.
* Notes for similar type of exams will appear to be standard and similar
* Store / organize data for subsequent retrieval.
* Each click adds data elements to the database. Point-and-click systems create data that can be used to generate clinically useful reports, such as health maintenance reminders, disease management etc.
* One of the major advantages of template based charting is the time needed to make the document available as a medical record. Since notes are created within the EMR, they are available immediately upon completion.

Disadvantages
* It takes more time, and definitely more concentration for a physician to navigate through large data set and create progress notes using point and click templates.
* Templates must be customized as per the physicians requirement.
* Customization can be inflexible and costly.
* Well accepted by only tech-savvy doctors.
* The approach of direct data entry by the physician has generally failed because busy providers reject it altogether.
* Output from these templates is too canned and identical. It loses individuality for each patient.
* It is difficult for a provider to capture complete patient encounter on computer in front of a patient.

Medical Transcription
Transcription has long been the standard for documenting patient encounters. It is more convenient for a provider as compared to handwritten notes or electronic data entry. There are many advantages of transcription in comparison to point and click charting. There are a few disadvantages as well.

Advantages

* Correspond intuitively to the physician’s usual method of working. Dictation remains the most intuitive and least time-consuming means of data entry.
* Physicians can dictate anytime, anywhere using PDA, Dictaphone or telephone at their convenience.
* Providers need not change the way they practice just to accommodate an EMR. EMR can interact with transcription service so that transcriptions can be attached directly into the patients electronic medical record, if such a facility is provided by the EMR vendor.
* It requires minimal training for physicians.
* Provides expressive power to describe patients condition and other health related events

Disadvantages

* Details of the exam can easily be forgotten and omitted while dictating, if dictation is not captured immediately at the point of care
* It cannot be queried for generating reports unless transcribed in pre-formatted templates
* Transcribed reports are not immediately accessible. Physicians would normally have to wait for 12 to 24 hours for charts to be delivered, unless few vendors supporting 2-4 hours short turn around time.
* Transcription provides for more efficient use of doctor’s time.
* Although average transcribed report costs $2 to $4, it can reduce the doctor’s time spent on data entry.

Considering the value of doctors time, transcription is not a costly proposition.

EMR should give the freedom to the physician to decide to use either Point & Click or Medical Transcription. For a physician, the EMR that fits into his practice workflow would be invaluable. A competent EMR must have a template driven charting feature and the ability to interact with a transcription service at the same time. Both are indispensable features of Electronic Medical Record Software, as doctors are not unanimous on point and click charting or transcription. Such an EMR will be both efficient and cost effective.
The trends in transcription itself are changing with Medical Transcription service providers aiming to adopt new technologies. These technologies will evolve to increase efficiency & accuracy, decrease turnaround time and support data capture. While many of these technologies like such as digital dictation and electronic signature exist today, several technologies are still on the horizon.

Computer Support MSConfig

January 6th, 2011 by admin

The computer. The thing we all love to hate. It does so many important things for us, yet also causes some of our biggest headaches. There is always something that needs to be fixed or optimized, no matter what we do it seems. No matter how well they invent new technology, something still breaks down.

And when it does, you end up calling tech support where either you or the technician is bound to feel stupid at some point. Believe me, its the technician in many cases, so dont feel bad.

In this article, I am going to go over one of the most common computer problems and how to fix it without calling a computer support technician, or your Uncle Bobs third cousins friend, who knows a lot about computers.

Lets start at the beginning. Booting up, that (for some of us) long process where your computer comes to life. I read a book that explains computers pretty well. In it, the author said that when a computer gets turned on its as if every time you woke up, you had to make sure you still had 10 fingers, 10 toes, two eyes, two arms, etc.

That is exactly what a computer does as it boots up and starts the operating system. It uses the registry to examine itself to see if anything it remembers having is not there anymore. So look at the registry as the brain. I do not recommend novice computer users doing anything in the registry. If you would not be comfortable performing your own lobotomy, then leave the registry alone.

Windows comes with tools built into the operating system that makes changes to the registry for you. One of these you should get to know well is msconfig. Every program you download had someone programming it that believes you cannot live without his or her software program running all the time and starting up every time you start your computer.

For almost all software, this is not the case. You can live without his or her program running constantly on your computer. Even Microsoft office and Corel office install themselves into your startup process. They must have thought while writing that program, that everyone will be using their product as soon as they boot up so lets tell the computer to go ahead and do that for them,.

Go to start, the little button in the lower left hand side of your computer, in most instances. Now click on run. Type in msconfig. You will see several options. Normal startup, Diagnostic startup, and Selective startup. We are going to be selective today and from now on, so click selective.

Now on the tabs at the top, choose startup. You will see all the programs that startup when your computer boots up. Some of these are necessary and some are not. If you are unsure what something is, do not remove the check by it. Ill tell you how to figure that out in a minute.

Some things you will see that need to stay in are load power profile, scanregistry, taskmonitor, system tray, and hotkeyscommands.

You can leave those in. Now to the right you will see paths to where the programs are and most will provide a clue as to what they are for. Pretty much anything to do with your Internet connection, your printer, your mouse, or other items you know you need should stay checked. Anything to do with your virus program should be left alone as well.

Others like schedulers you dont use, QuickTime or quicktask, MSN messenger, Yahoo pager, RealPlayer, Quickview, search anything, Microsoft Office, Corel Office, etc. can be unchecked. Microsoft and Corel Office will work just fine when you go to use them without having them in your startup menu.

The same goes for the other programs. They do not need to be running until you decide you need them. Once you begin to take control of your computer and learn what makes it tick, the less you will depend on those long tech support calls.

Once you have unchecked all of the programs you know for sure do not need to be there, hit apply, then ok. It will tell you that you need to reboot. So go ahead and do that after you save this article or bookmark it so you can see what to do next.

After you reboot, you will get a popup that says something like, OH MY GOD! You have chosen to change some settings! Are you sure?! Make sure you check the box that says dont show me this dramatic popup anymore, then close that.

Go back to start, run, type msconfig again. Go back to the tab at the top that says startup. If there is anything you were not sure of that you wish to remove, go ahead, but only pick one! Important, only pick one, then reboot to see if that one caused you any problems. If it does, then you simply go back to msconfig, check the box back again and reboot again. You can repeat this for each of the ones you were not sure about removing.

I hope I have saved you at least one computer tech support call with this article. Your computer should now run a little faster and you know what to do every time you download a new program. Go see if it installed itself into the startup folder and remove it if you do not need it at startup. Happy computing!

Making USB Devices Even More Convenient

January 4th, 2011 by admin

USB (Universal Serial Bus) has revolutionized the way we connect peripherals to our computers. Replacing standard serial connections, USB has become the standard for connecting everything from printers to fans to toys to memory drives. With advancements in modern operating systems, USB devices are almost always easy to install. These devices are low power, reliable, and versatile.

In this article, we will explore some of the benefits of USB devices and how to make using USB devices even more convenient.

Ever since Windows 98, USB devices have been automatically detected when plugged in. The computers operating system will automatically try to find the drivers needed for the device and install them. If the drivers can not be found, a simple google search will often pull up what is needed.

The devices you choose are up to you and what you are trying to accomplish. Many people have very standard USB devices like printers, a mouse, keyboard, etc. These are great, but what if you want to do more with that little rectangular port? Fortunately, there are a lot of options out there.

One thing many people find useful is a USB snake light. These flexible lights plug right in and can provide your nighttime work area with a little light to help you see the keyboard and your work area. Getting even more wacky, USB toys such as small anti-coworker missile launchers, shavers, and more.

If you plan on having many USB devices at once, it is a good idea to get a hub. Not only will this give you more ports than what your computer provides on its own, but it will allow you to provide your devices with more reliable power. This is because many USB hubs are externally powered. With many USB devices hooked up to your computer, sometimes you can get power surges or other power problems, and these are never good for the delicate electronics inside USB devices. A powered hub alleviates this problem and makes sure your devices are getting clean, constant power – especially power hogs like USB-connected disk drives.

Sometimes you may want to share one USB device with many computers. There are several ways that you can accomplish this. One way is to use a device server. Device servers make your USB device available to anyone on a network. This a great solution for a printer that is used by more than one person in an office or home.

The main drawback of USB device servers is their cost. These servers are not cheap as they combine a USB hub and network connectivity in one box. Still, despite the cost they are the best choice for some people.

Another solution is to use a USB peripheral switch. These switches work locally between two or more computers and allow you to switch your devices between those computers. You could, for example, connect a printer to a peripheral switch and then connect the peripheral switch to two computers. Computer A can print transparently through the switch without any problems. When computer B is ready to print, the switch is simply activated and now that station is connected to the printer.

A switch is great for people who dont need the solution of a full blown server, but still need to share USB devices. They are expandable and reliable. Many switches are even automatic. They will switch between the connected computers whenever one tries to access the USB device and the user will never need to touch a thing.

USB peripheral switches are a good choice because they are inexpensive and reliable. They start at around a third of the price as a USB device server and often solve the same problems. USB peripheral switches are also available with ports for several devices or several computers, depending on what is needed.

No matter what you situation, there are always solutions out there for you. USB peripheral switches and USB device servers will help you solve many USB device sharing problems around the home, home office, or small business.

Spyware: Protect Your Privacy

January 4th, 2011 by admin

What is Spyware?

I have lost count of the number of times that we have been called out to repair a personal computer and found that the system was damaged by “Spyware”. Spyware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Adware).

Advertising Spyware is software that is installed alongside other software or via ActiveX controls on the internet, often without the user’s knowledge, or without full disclosure that it will be used for gathering personal information and/or showing the user ads. Advertising Spyware logs information about the user, possibly including passwords, email addresses, web browsing history, online buying habits, the computer’s hardware and software configuration, the name, age, sex, etc of the user.

In addition to privacy and security concerns, resource-hogging Adware and Spyware can cause system and browser instability and slowness.

Here are a couple of scenarios indicating a Spyware “infection”.

– Scenario 1:

Your search engine is New: Google. You visit the Google website and do your search. All of a sudden you have advertisements popping up all over your screen. Annoying right? The Google web site does not use pop-ups! It is against their company philosophy (another reason why I love Google). So where are the pop-ups coming from? There is software (Spyware) on your PC monitoring your key strokes and hard drive contents and sending the information to a third party on the Internet which then presents advertising pop-ups to you based on your search interests or the web sites you have been visiting.

This scenario illustrates how Spyware can be extremely annoying. But worse, consider the security and privacy issues that are highlighted by this type monitoring. How secure are your passwords that you use locally or online? Is this information being sent back to a server along with other personal or business information scanned from your hard drive? Maybe, maybe not. It is not worth taking a chance. We will discuss how to identify and prevent Spyware from “infecting” your system a little later.

- Scenario 2:

You start your computer in the morning. The PC was never the fastest on the block to boot up and be ready to work but it was never as slow as it is now. Now the computer’s hard drive’s light stays on continuously and you can hear the hard drive thrashing away in your computer. This abnormal disk activity is a clue that there may be Spyware scanning your hard drive and sending the results to a third party which in turn is using it to aim advertising at you based on your interests.

The second scenario illustrates not only the privacy and security issues mentioned in scenario one, but also the resources that the Spyware appropriates for it’s own use. The most noticeable resource degradation is that of the PC itself. Valuable RAM, CPU cycles, and hard disk reads are being used by the Spyware for it’s own use. On a slower PC this resource use is very noticeable creating an unusable and unstable PC for periods of time. User productivity is sure to suffer because of this. Network and Internet bandwidth is also being used by the Spyware which results in slower access for legitimate network communications and can result in reduced productivity and higher costs of network ownership.

How to Identify a Spyware “Infestation”

There are some clues that indicate spyware could be installed on a computer.
You are bombarded with pop-up ads every time you use the web browser.
The PC is showing sluggishness and increased disk activity is noticed.
The PC becomes increasingly unstable and more prone to crashes and blue screens.
Icons appear in the taskbar tray that weren’t there before.
Network activity is observed when the computer is not being used.
An increase in the amount and frequency of email spam is observed.

There are many freeware titles available that install Spyware on your system. One of the most identifiable types of Spyware is from a company called Gator Advertising(http://www.gator.com/). Their Spyware is installed alongside free programs such as Precision Time, Date Manager, and Offer Companion. You may have seen one or more of these programs after they magically appear in your Taskbar Tray (where your computer clock is displayed). See figure 2-1 and 2-2. Ever wondered how they got there? You’re about to find out.

How Spyware is Installed

Some Internet websites utilize additional software to enable special features available on the site. One of the most common sites using this technology is the Microsoft Windows Update site. Before installing updates, you are required to accept the installation of a small piece of software called an ActiveX control. Shockwave enhanced sites also require the acceptance of additional software. It is okay to accept this software. Provided that your Web Browser security settings are enabled you will be shown a screen asking permission to install the software. See figure 2-3 and 2-4

Now this is where it gets confusing. Have a look at the figure 2-5 and 2-6 below. Not much difference from the Shockwave and Windows Update Security Warnings shown above. These usually popup when you are first entering a website which gives the impression that they are required in order to view the site. Not so. That’s where they get you. Most users will assume they need to install the software, they click and the Spyware payload is downloaded to their PC. Other forms of spyware infection are a result of saying OK to offers like the ones shown in Figure 2-7 and figure 2-8.

How to Prevent Spyware “Infection”

The chance of keeping a PC free of Spyware infection is greatly increased by following a few simple rules.
Ensure that your internet browser settings are set to at least default levels. Internet Explorer security settings are accessible by going to the Internet Explorer Tools menu and choosing Internet Options. Go to the Security tab to view or modify the settings.
Read all security warnings before hitting the Yes button. If you are unsure, choose No. If it turns out the webpage to be viewed requires the download, hit the Refresh button on the web browser or use the F5 key to refresh the screen.
Avoid using peer-to-peer file sharing services such as Kazaa. They are notorious for packaging Spyware with their programs.
Check your start menu, desktop, and Add/Remove Programs module for unknown installed applications.
Regularly clean out the internet browsers temporary files and cookie cache. This can be performed from Internet Explorers Internet Options on the General tab.
Whenever possible, close advertising pop-ups using the Close “X” in the top right corner of the window. If there appears to be no way of closing the window without clicking a button within the window, don’t. Press the Alt and F4 key at the same time. This will close the window in focus.
Use a firewall product that monitors and prevents unauthorized applications and data from both entering and leaving the PC.
Use Spyware cleaning software such as New: AdAware from New: Lavasoft. Scan for Spyware regularly.
In a corporate environment it is good practice to disable a users ability to install software on the PC.
Educate yourself and other users about what Spyware is and how it can be prevented.
Have your computer examined by a qualified computer technician who can access vulnerabilities and suggest ways of increasing your computer’s security.

In Conclusion

There are millions of useful websites on the Internet that survive exclusively due to their use of various forms of advertising. Internet advertising has evolved to the point where it is possible to aim advertising to a very precise target audience. This capability has brought with it a hornet’s nest of privacy and security issues.

A lot of the targeted advertising is possible because of Spyware software. Spyware is a tool that provides advertisers with data about a target computer and user. It is often installed accidentally or without the users knowledge. Spyware logs information about the user, possibly including passwords, email addresses, web browsing history, online buying habits, the computer’s hardware and software configuration, the name, age, sex, etc of the user, and sends this information to a third party on the Internet, usually an advertiser.

Advertising pop-ups, system instability, sluggishness, and increased hard drive and network activity are all symptoms of a Spyware “infestation”.

To prevent Spyware “infestations” there are some simple rules that a user should follow. They include such things as ensuring that Internet settings are set to at least default settings. The use of a good firewall, which monitors activity both in and out of your computer, can assist in identifying and preventing Spyware. Avoid installing peer-to-peer file sharing software and offers to install software that may pop-up on your screen. Educate yourself about Spyware and how it can be prevented.

For a thorough examination of your system and its vulnerabilities contact a qualified computer technician. They will be able to identify areas of concern and suggest ways to increase your computers security.

Glossary

ActiveX Control – A control using ActiveX technologies. An ActiveX control can be automatically downloaded and executed by a Web browser. ActiveX is not a programming language, but rather a set of rules for how applications should share information. ActiveX controls have full access to the Windows operating system. With this power comes a certain risk that the applet may damage software or data on your machine. To control this risk, Microsoft developed a registration system so that browsers can identify and authenticate an ActiveX control before downloading it.

Cookie – A message given to a Web browser by a Web server. The browser stores the message in a text file. The message is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server. The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and possibly prepare customized Web pages for them. When you enter a Web site using cookies, you may be asked to fill out a form providing such information as your name and interests. This information is packaged into a cookie and sent to your Web browser which stores it for later use. The next time you go to the same Web site, your browser will send the cookie to the Web server. The server can use this information to present you with custom Web pages. So, for example, instead of seeing just a generic welcome page you might see a welcome page with your name on it.

Shockwave – A technology developed by Macromedia, Inc. that enables Web pages to include multimedia objects.

Spyware – Also called adware , spyware is any software that covertly gathers user information through the user’s Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

Mac Data Recovery Explained

December 29th, 2010 by admin

HPS and HFS+ are the Apple Macintosh systems for referencing stored data and hard drives. HFS and HFS+ data recovery methods are uniquely adept for Apple and are not to be confused with NTFS and fat file systems, used by Microsoft.

So what are some examples of errors that might require data recovery for Macs?

- Unreadable disks
- General disk errors
- No Volume (or Volume that isnt HFS)
- An uninstalled drive
- Computer cannot find the directory
- Internal file system errors
- Flawed master directory block
- Non-Macintosh disks
- Improper file names
- Segment Loader Error

If you use a Mac, whether for business or pleasure, you must protect your valuable data from hackers, viruses, human error, power surges, hard drive failures, and other unexpected problems. The most essential step to keeping your data safe is to back up files regularly you should always be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Files, databases, emails, spreadsheets, and all other important data can be easily salvaged if this step is taken.

Macs and PCs both offer limited solutions for data loss. Macs are especially susceptible to data loss! But with data recovery, all bets are on.

When encountering data recovery problems, dont try and fix the problem alone. A hard drive is complicated and repair requires special tools, a clean room environment, and expert technological know-how. If you attempt to take on this task by yourself, not only may you be unable to retrieve the data, but you may also incur further damage on the drive.

But thats okay, because data recovery assistance and service is only a call away. Skilled technicians can evaluate the lost data and instruct you on how to solve the problem. But dont expect the job to be done in one day. This kind of repair is challenging; it can take almost a week before your data is recovered.

Computer Repair

December 29th, 2010 by admin

Owing a computer is almost essential in todays world. With the introduction of the internet and the convenience of email as a method of communication, its easy to see why most people want to have a computer in their home or office.

Computers are like anything else and there are times when they dont operate as planned. Its frustrating to be sitting at your desk ready to play a game or work on a document only to find that your computer isnt being cooperative.

When it comes to computer repair its often wise to seek out professional help. A computer technician is specially trained to evaluate the problem and offer the best possible solution.

There are certain types of computer repair that you might want to undertake yourself. These are usually minor fixes that can be handled with a bit of instruction and attention to detail.

A computer repair that you might be able to take care of yourself is the replacement of the computers battery or fan. Every desktop computer has a fan inside of it. This fan is used to keep the computers components cool. Its essential that the fan operates efficiently to ensure that the computer doesnt become overheated.

The first sign that your computers fan might not be operating properly is that youll notice a different sound when you start or run your computer. Instead of immediately taking it to a computer repair shop, take a moment to test the fan.

Computers typically have two fans. One is used to cool the power supply and the other is used to cool the CPU. Open the cover of the computer and listen. If the sound does appear to be coming from the fan that cools the CPU youll want to replace it.

If the computer is still under warranty than this type of computer repair will be done free of charge. Follow the instructions you were given for repairs at the time of purchase. If the warranty period has elapsed you can either take it to a computer repair shop or do it yourself.

The very first and most important step when doing any computer repair is to unplug the computer from the electrical outlet. Youll then need to examine the fan to see how its connected. It will probably be attached by a few small screws. Once these are loosened youll need to disconnect the fan from its power supply. This will be one or two small clips. Then take the fan to your computer repair shop and purchase a new one.

After replacing it, reattach the cover and plug the machine in. The fan should operate perfectly now and the noise that you were hearing will have disappeared.

Sometimes a computer will make noises because a piece of hardware isnt attached properly. One of the likely culprits is the CD-Rom or DVD drive. Again for this type of computer repair, youll want to carefully remove the cover and listen for the source of the noise. After tightening the screws that hold the hardware in place and reattaching the cover, plug the machine in and listen if the offending noise is gone.

When it comes to computer repair its important to be safe and thorough. Computers are an expensive investment and keeping them running efficiently is crucial. If you are comfortable handling a small computer repair yourself, give it a try. If youre not comfortable, take the machine to a local computer repair shop and allow the experts to do their job.

Share And Share Alike With New Flash-Based Media

December 27th, 2010 by admin

In a flash, new technology can change the way we capture, save and share memories and important data.

Consider the rapid evolution from floppy diskettes, to CDs, to USB flash drives. We are now able to store and transfer gigabytes of information onto devices the size of a thumb.

However, when sharing digital content with colleagues or friends, sometimes we don’t really need large capacities. According to a February 2006 study by ICR Market Research, about one-third of us share only a couple of files at a time. Floppies don’t have the capacity to hold a five-megapixel digital photo, and floppy drives are quickly becoming obsolete.

Flash drives are now one of the easiest ways to transfer files, but most are too high capacity-and too expensive-to be given away. Recently, flash technology providers have begun introducing affordable, lower-capacity alternatives.

The newly released FlashDisc device is designed for sharing data, photos, business presentations and more between classmates, colleagues, friends and family. Students, for example, can share FlashDiscs in the classroom while collaborating on team projects. Professionals can use FlashDiscs to send presentations to clients.

Here’s how a typical FlashDisc, like ones sold by Memorex, compare to other modes of transferring digital content:

• At 16MB, each FlashDisc features over 10 times the capacity of a floppy, holding up to 400 text documents, 10 presentations or 40 digital photos.

• Though they don’t hold as much information as CDs or DVDs, FlashDiscs don’t require special hardware, software or expertise to use.

• FlashDiscs offer the same plug-and-play convenience as flash drives, but they cost a fraction of the price, making them a more appropriate option for sharing content when you don’t want to give up your 2GB flash drive.

• Although sending e-mail attachments is a fast and easy way of exchanging files, many files are now just too large to be sent via e-mail, or, in some cases, attachments can be blocked by firewalls or other security settings.

“FlashDiscs can be used virtually anywhere and are durable enough to toss in a briefcase or backpack without the need for a protective case,” said Scott Elrich, director of product management, personal storage devices, Memorex.

At 2.3 inches in diameter and a thickness of just 0.3 inches, the FlashDisc’s thin, round design is durable and portable, like a floppy diskette. The device works with virtually any USB port on a PC or Mac. And like a floppy, FlashDisc includes adhesive write-on labels, something that you don’t get with your typical flash drive.

Servers – Do You Need One For Your Business?

December 25th, 2010 by admin

When you start an online business, one of the most important decisions you can make is which server to use. A web server is what makes an internet site run. It takes a web page request, finds the URLs file, and loads the file onto the requesters browser. The base of any online business is the server, and the key to choosing the right server is knowing the needs of your business and understanding which server will provide the most benefits.

If you own a small business, Virtual Hosting is a popular choice. You can open an account for somewhere between 20 and 50 dollars a month. Youre only allowed one site per account, so if you decide to create a second website, just open a second account. Because its a single server with numerous users, it is controlled by an administrator. If you want to change your settings, you must contact the administrator and leave it to him/her to decide what to do. The good side of this is that you dont have to worry about knowing how to work the program; the bad side is that you dont have as much control. However, if you own a small business with just one or two websites, its a smart decision.

If you own a larger business with more websites, a Virtual Private Server may be a better option. It is a single server that branches out, which means you share expenses with other users while maintaining your freedom. Its best if you have some knowledge of the program, as you are your own administrator, controlling the settings with the help of a manual. However, even if you dont know the program, youll do well as long as you feel comfortable with the manual. Because a Virtual Private Server lets you have up to 50 websites at just over 100 dollars a month, this is the wisest choice if you own a big, complex business.

You must also know which web server software to choose. Sometimes youre not given a choice, but in case you are, know the pros and cons of each option.

Two popular types of web server software are Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and Apache. You can only use IIS on NT-based server systems – basically, Microsoft with Microsoft. However, it is easy to use, heavily backed, and has crash protection. Apache, on the other hand, doesnt have any support, but its free and is therefore the most popular web server software in the world. It is updated all the time for your convenience.

There are many other servers and software to choose from, but these are some of the basics that will help you make your choices. Online businesses are hard to manage, so you dont want to choose the wrong server and spend all your time worrying about it instead of profits. Taking into account costs, safety, and preferences, you can choose your server wisely and make your business a success, starting from the base and working up.

Computer Forensics – Finding Out What The Bad Guys Did

Computer Forensics – Finding Out What The Bad Guys Did With Their Computers!

Computer forensics is a lot like the CSI investigation programs on the television. Using advanced techniques and technologies, a computer forensic scientist will reconstruct a possible crime using the data that one computer systems. This data may include email trails, files, hidden directories and other related clues.

Computer Forensics is the scientific study of computers or computer related data in relation to an investigation by a law enforcement agency for use in a court of law. While this technology may be as old as computers themselves, the advances in technology are constantly revising this science.

While all computer languages are created with ones and zeros, it’s much easier to track what was done when, although by whom continues to be problematic. Forensic science has done well to keep up with the task of tracking and tracing what is done and creation of a timeline in an attempt to reconstruct a possible crime. Although it’s possible to clean and remove data from a hard drive, most people simply think that a delete key really removed the data. In actuality, the delete key simply removed the file location from an index file and the actual data is still safely on the system. It’s up to the data recovery skills of the forensic computer personnel to capture and restore that data without modification.

Computer forensics can be used to track emails, instant messaging and just about any other form of computer related communications. This can be necessary, especially in the world where computers and data travel around the world in seconds. Packet sniffers can literally be placed within a data stream and provide information on what’s running through the network in real time. This is really phenomenal considering the millions upon millions of data packets moving through any individual part of the network.

Computer forensic science is an interesting niche in the law enforcement field that is seldom considered as a career. As it’s relatively new, the field is considered by many to be wide open for anyone with the initiative to learn the skills. Unlike many computer related jobs, a computer forensic specialist will not be outsourced to a country on the other side of the world. The confidentiality of the data is just too sensitive to allow it to travel throughout the world just to save a little cash.

Scalability testing: 7 steps to success

December 20th, 2010 by admin

Systems that work well during development, deployed on a small scale, can fail to meet performance goals when the deployment is scaled up to support real levels of use.

An apposite example of this comes from a major blue chip company that recently outsourced the development of an innovative high technology platform. Though development was behind schedule this was deemed acceptable. The system gradually passed through functional elements of the user acceptance testing and eventually it looked like a deployment date could be set. But then the supplier started load testing and scalability testing. There followed a prolonged and costly period of architectural changes and changes to the system requirements. The supplier battled heroically to provide an acceptable system, until finally the project was mothballed.

This is not an isolated case. IT folklore abounds with similar tales. From ambulance dispatch systems to web-sites for the electronic submission of tax returns, systems fail as they scale and experience peak demands. All of these projects appear not to have identified and ordered the major risks they faced. This is a fundamental stage of risk based testing, and applies equally to scalability testing or load testing as it does to functionality testing or business continuity testing. With no risk assessment they did not recognise that scaling was amongst the biggest risks, far more so that delivering all the functionality

Recent trends towards Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) attempt to address the issue of scalability but also introduce new issues. Incorporating externally provided services into your overall solution means that your ability to scale now depends upon these external system operate under load. Assuring this is a demanding task and sadly the load testing and stress testing here is often overlooked.

Better practice is to start the development of a large scale software system with its performance clearly in mind, particularly scalability testing, volume testing and load testing. To create this performance testing focus:

1. Research and quantify the data volumes and transaction volumes the target market implies. Some of these figures can be eye openers and help the business users realise the full scale of the system. This alone can lead to reassessment of the priority of many features.

2, Determine the way features could be presented to users and the system structured in order to make scaling of the system easier. Do not try and have the same functionality you would have for a single user desktop solution provide an appropriate scalable alternative.

3. Recognise that an intrinsic part of the development process is load testing at representative scale on each incremental software release. This is continual testing, focusing on the biggest risk to the project: the ability to operate at full scale.

4. Ensure load testing is adequate both in scope and rigour. Load testing is not just about measuring response times with a performance test. The load testing programme needs to include other types of load testing including stress testing, reliability testing, and endurance testing.

5. Dont forget that failures will occur. Large scale systems generally include server clusters with fail-over behaviour. Failure testing, fail-over testing and recovery testing carried out on representative scale systems operating under load should be included.

6. Dont forget catastrophic failure could occur. For large scale problems, disaster testing and disaster recovery testing should be carried out at representative scale and loads. These activities can be considered the technical layers of business continuity testing.

7. Recognise external services if you use them. Where you are adopting an SOA approach and are dependent on external services you need to be certain that the throughput and turnaround time on these services will remain acceptable as your system scales and its demands increase. A smart system architecture will include a graceful response and fall-back operation should the external service behaviour deteriorate or fail.

LCD TV Checklist: Are You Prepared?

December 20th, 2010 by admin

LCD flat screen TVs provide a superior picture as compared to a traditional television – and they can come in more attractive styles to boot. A flat screen LCD TV can be mounted on a wall, under a cabinet, on the ceiling or can sit on a stand or on top of furniture. LCD TVs are versatile, flexible, and provide a better entertainment experience but how do they work?

LCD flat screen TVs, and LCD technology itself, is based on the properties of polarized light. LCD TVs consist of two, perpendicularly arranged panes of polarized glass “stuck together” by a liquid-crystal-filled polymer solution. When they are exposed to electrical currents, the crystals untwist to varying degrees, permitting specific amounts and colors of light to pass though them. Flat screen LCD TVs are, in effect, projection TVs that depend on an extremely bright lamp as their light source, so they’re considered a “passive” display.

So how do you choose the right flat panel LCD TV for you? You should at least consider the following factors when shopping for a flat panel LCD TV.

1. Look for a HDMI input. This port keeps the signal all-digital, avoiding degradation that can occur as the signal passes through other components (like your cable box). HMDI carries high-definition audio as well as video. Some satellite receivers and DVD players also connect through this port.

2. Match the LCD TV size to the size of the room where it will be placed. Because LCD TVs have higher resolutions than conventional TVs, you can sit closer than you normally would, so you can view a larger screen comfortably. (Keep in mind a 42-inch screen may overwhelm a small room, though.)

3. Decide if you want the picture-in-picture feature. The picture in picture feature allows you to simultaneously view two video sources at once, with one appearing as a small window on the screen. If you do want picture-in-picture in your flat panel LCD TV, keep in mind that single-tuner picture-in-picture lets you watch TV in one window and another source (like a DVD) in the second window. A flat panel LCD TV with two tuners lets you watch two television sources at once.

4. Do you need HDTV? A flat panel LCD TV with EDTV is cheaper, but it can’t display high-definition signals. The price difference between smaller flat panel HD-ready LCDs and ED-ready LCDs is fairly low, so you’re better off buying a HD-ready set. In fact, most experts say there’s little reason to buy a non-HD LCD television. These lower resolution LCD TVs won’t be able to accept high-definition signals, so the picture won’t look any better than regular analog TV. And small HD-ready LCD TVs can be found for $500 or less, which is cheap enough that there really isn’t much to “save” on a non-HD LCD TV.

5. Check to see if the TV comes with a stand or mounting hardware. Most flat panel LCD TVs come with a basic table stand, but wall-mounting hardware costs an additional $100 to $200.

6. Look into the manufacturer’s warranty policy before buying online. Some manufacturers have strict policies regarding authorized dealers. If you buy a Sharp LCD Television, for example, from an unauthorized dealer, Sharp may not offer warranty coverage. (However, the retailer may offer a substitute warranty that sufficiently covers you.) The difference in price between an authorized Sharp dealer and a discounter can sometimes be hundreds of dollars, so make sure you’re comfortable with the risk of not having a warranty, or make sure you ask the dealer for information about their warranty terms for the flat panel LCD TV you’re considering.

7. Finally, learn about LCD TVs. There are far more things to learn about LCD TVs than the above mentioned points. Get educated on how to buy an LCD TV.
