Knowing when your teen is at the right age to get a license may be easy for some parents and difficult for others.

How your teen acts around you and when not in your presence goes a long way in whether they should have a license.
For example, are they getting good grades in school? If you said no, don’t you want their priorities to be with school, not driving? Although some kids with bad grades are in fact good drivers, you want your teen to have focus.
The bottom line is some 16-year-old kids are not mature for their age and some seem more mature than 16. Only you can tell if your teen has what it takes to be responsible when they get behind the wheel. This is true of the family vehicle or even one you might buy for them.
Research Any Vehicle You May Get for Them
If you are toying with the idea of getting a car or truck for your teen, knowing the history of a vehicle is important.
Some of the vehicle history info you’d prefer to have would include:
- Was the vehicle in an accident? If the vehicle you think about buying was in more than a fender-bender accident, you’d want to know the repairs it got. As such, doing a VIN or license plate search of the vehicle can help you gain some information. The last thing you want to do is see your teen behind the wheel of a car or truck that may not be all that roadworthy.
- Is the vehicle under recall? – You hear about vehicle and other product recalls on a regular basis. With that being the case, is a car or truck you might buy for your teen under recall? If it is, learn the details. Some recalls are rather mundane. Others can be of a more serious nature.
You should also look to see what kind of technology is in the vehicle you have your eyes on for your teen.
In the event it is an older car or truck, it may not be up to speed on some of the more recent safety advances.
It is always important to try and have the right vehicle technology to protect your teen.
So, if the vehicle does not have a backup camera or lane-departure system, try to find one with such options.
